Mercedes Recalling 1.3 million cars

About 1.3 million Mercedes recalled

Carmaker concerned about voltage regulators, battery control, brake systems.
March 31, 2005: 9:21 AM EST

FRANKFURT (Reuters) - U.S.-German carmaker DaimlerChrysler is recalling 1.3 million Mercedes cars as it tries to fix quality woes that are riddling its German luxury car division, it said Thursday.

Mercedes will recall the cars in several model ranges worldwide to fix problems with alternators and batteries, which do not affect the cars' safety, according to the supplier, car-parts maker Robert Bosch.

Mercedes chief Eckhard Cordes, who said earlier this year that his drive to resolve the quality problems would hit this year's earnings, said the cars Mercedes makes now are of high quality and that the recall addressed legacy problems.

Re: Mercedes Recalling 1.3 million cars

My wife's 2003 SL-500 Convt has now been recalled four times (assuming it's included here). At least the convt top has not been a source of trouble...

Here is more detail:

DaimlerChrysler Recalls 1.3 Million Mercedes-Benz Models Worldwide to Check for Power Problems

FRANKFURT, Germany (AP) -- DaimlerChrysler AG said Thursday it is recalling some 1.3 million Mercedes-Benz models worldwide to fix a problem with alternators and batteries.

In a statement, the German-U.S. auto maker said the models in years from 2001 to 2004 and include current E-, SL- and CLS-class models that have been built since 2001.

The Stuttgart-based company said that models with six- and eight-cylinder engines need to have the voltage regulator examined and, if needed, replaced.

On the E-class and CLS-class models, built from January 2002-January 2005, battery control software will be installed. The company also said the braking system on the E, SL and CLS-class made since June 2001 would be updated.

I like Mercedes-Benz and the way they perform. But I guess one has to be rich enough not only to buy them, but to own them! The replacement costs for parts are expensive and unfortunately, the reliability of M-B has gone through rough turf.

This is what happens when overengineer cars by stuffing them full of mostly unnecessary and complex gadgets.

Re: Mercedes Recalling 1.3 million cars

Funniest thing what I have heard of is S-class battery that will die if the car is not used in almost every day. Thats like from some comedy sketch.

Does anybody know how MB's fully electric brakes will work if they is no electricity?

My buddy has a new Mercedes van that apparently had no gearbox oil. uups...

Did the guy who bought a Grand Am get a divorce? Why the hell would anyone go from a Mercedes to a Grand Am?

if you can't start your car why are you worried about your brakes?

this is just one example in this thread of the ignorance about the recall...read it...it's a battery and alternator charging issue...it has nothing to do with computers, being bleeding edge, over-engineering or anything else of that nature...

Mercedes is STILL a prestige brand name in ANY form...the quality issues are being handled this is a relatively minor issue it's just a significant number of cars were plagued by it.

Whaaaaat?? Mercedes to Grand Am???
I'm gonna assume that it was one of the Mercedes C-class hatchbacks and not something like an E-class.

This is very sad... Daimler must be spinning in his grave, eh?

Re: Mercedes Recalling 1.3 million cars

So Mercedes is just now issuing one recall for three seperate, unrelated problems (regulators, battery control, &brake systems)?? So either this is a freak occurance where they learned about all three problems at the same time, or they've been sitting on these issues, and letting them pile up. Well that's nice and comforting to see them issue recalls at their leisurely pace...don't solve the problems as they arise.
