From autoblog:
Quote:
The Mercedes-Benz S-Class received high praise from the Austrian motor specialist magazine "Firmenwagen" with the magazine's readership voted the luxury sedan as "Fleet Car of the Year 2006." The S-Class was chosen in recognization to its array of technology such as:

I wonder why not the E-class. They're used as taxis in Germany.

Within Europe Mercedes cars aren't purely luxury vehicles, like in the United States. Therefore, Europe has them as fleet cars also.

Re: Merc S-class joins the Impala as a fleet car of the year

"Fleet" has a slightly different meaning in Europe. The name of the magazine would actually be "company car" in English. Management positions in a company usually come with a company car as a benefit. That way whoever gets the car can save on income taxes and the company gets to write off the lease payments. So the award is basically for "CEO car of the year", not "rental car of the year".

A US-style rental fleet business doesn't exist in Europe because car manufacturers don't really keep any inventory. New car buyers order their cars, they don't buy what's on the lot.
Since manufacturers aren't forced to unload thousands of unsold cars, rental car companies basically have to buy/lease them like anyone else.

I think Americans should copy that business model. No inventory! There can be representative models, but no stock.

It's not so much the manufacturers but the dealers and customers. You know, the whole impulse buy and instant gratification thing. Different mentalities. It's more common to pay for a car outright or finance only part of the price in Europe, and since it takes a year or more to save for the car anyway, people don't mind waiting a few weeks or months for it to be built. In the US this wouldn't fly.
