And Lexus says THEY have the smallest gaps...

I didn't notice how small the gap is between the door panel and the dashboard of the new Audi A6...I mean just look at it! There is NO gap!

They are amazing when it comes to this sort of precision. I don't understand why this precision doesn't relate to long term reliability...

That interior has a lot of well designed touches, but there's something off about it. It looks new and old at the same time. What's with all the grayness? Looks like they took the Malibu's color palette.

if u must know, if thats plastic (soft touch or whatnot) that is NOT a good thing to do.

On my Corolla the dash is made of plastic.

Now, the gap between the dash and the door panel is obviously much larger than that.
However, on Sunny days, the plastic will expand, DECREASING the size of the gap.

I dunno what material they use, but if it has the same expanding properties as plastic thats gonna be one tight fit.

Audi's exteriors are the same way just look at an A6's sheetmetal the next time you see one it's way tighter than anything I have seen from Lexus.

I think what makes this dash look dated is the lip running from the drivers side door to the center stack. This is taking it back to the early 90s. Audi has some of the most interesting and competent interiors in the industry but this one is going to have to go through some growing pains.

Right.. that silly running lip from the door to the center stack. Not only does it look like Early 90's... it looks like Early 80's. The lines do not flow. I don't even like the center stack. It looks disjointed.. and what's with that little compartment behind the shifter and under the HVAC controls? it looks like it flips up... but kinda stupid to be reaching into the recess to close it... And there looks to be a lot of empty plastic space between the buttons, especially next to the LCD.

Im sure teh plastics and wood are high quality touch and feel.... but the looks really does nothing for me at all.

STS looks a lot more fluid, and everything is controlled by that LCD, so you don't need all the fancy-schmancy buttons or iDrive.

Re: And Lexus says THEY have the smallest gaps...

It looks very high quality, but gaawwd there's a lot of gadgets. It's way to crowded: on the console, the armrest, the stack; freaking buttons everywhere!
BMW, Audi, etc are silly for going with the i-drive style. Cadillac's touch screens and F-buttons are much more user friendly, and it makes things less crowded.

Re: And Lexus says THEY have the smallest gaps...

Maybe the fit and finish is good, but I find several other interiors of cars in the A6's class more compelling. There's something old-looking about the overall interior design. I cannot place my finger on it exactly, but it has something to do with the steering wheel, the general look of the HVAC system, and the like... I even noticed this on other VW/Audi interiors. I guess there's an almost garish appeal to it. I'm more of a simplicity-is-beauty person, which may explain why I find the interior of the Phaeton overwrought, too. Again, it's nothing specific; it's a general Gestalt feeling.

Re: And Lexus says THEY have the smallest gaps...

That's some high quality fit an finish. As Ming says, too many gadgets. I'd never buy a car with all that electronic stuff that will just break in a few years anyway. Have the time I probably wouldn't use that electro-gear anyway. Get Audi to take that level of execution to the rest of the car and they'll match their perceived quality.
