Leftlanenews: BMW Cancels Large SUV

Quote:
Although it sometimes feels like an eon ago, SUVs – particularly large ones – were quite popular just a few years back. However, times – and particularly gas prices – have drastically changed over the last couple of years and drivers the world over have fallen out of love with big, thirsty four-by-fours. Thanks to that shift in consumer demand, BMW has officially cancelled its X7 SUV plans.

(I suppose when a German company cancels a future product it's considered smart. When a domestic does it ,it's stupid and evidence mis managment?)

Re: Leftlanenews: BMW Cancels Large SUV

Considering that the X5 with a V-8 gets 14 mpg city, and the X6 with the V-8 gets 13 mpg city, I don't want to think what an X7 would get.

Re: Leftlanenews: BMW Cancels Large SUV

There really was no need for an "X7."
X5 is more than sufficient, as is the X3. In concert with 3 and 5 series touring, BMW's well equipped to compete.

I thought you would have said something like "If BMW ever wants to be a world player, it needs a full line of vehicles to compete against the Escalade."

Actually, X7's competition would be closer to the Range Rover.
BMW isn't an SUV company, so an X7 would be an over-extension on its product line that was not necessary.
BMW's success isn't dependent on X7.

Land Rover is dependent on Range Rover. Cadillac is dependent on Escalade.

However, I would be surprised if Mercedes were to axe the G and GL because Mercedes is in fact a full-line luxury brand. But it wouldn't hurt so much, as GL is based on the ML platform.

BMW sells 3 sedans, a wagon, 4 coupes, 4 roadsters/convertibles, and 3 SUV-like vehicles in the US market (more in Europe), and that's not counting high-performance versions of several of those models. When they decide to not add yet another SUV, it's really not a big deal. I can't speak for others, but if Cadillac had that kind of a portfolio, I won't be complaning about the demise of one model either.

Who thinks it's stupid for domestic companies to cancel full-size SUVs?? Most people will agree that it's a good idea...

Do they only sell that special blend of European Koolaid you apparently drink from time to time, in San Francisco?

Yes... Lingonberry flavored Koolaid... from Scandinavia. I buy it at Ikea.

Dude....you need to hook me up with some of that! We're too small for an Ikea lol

Really though.....I'm glad BMW put the kibosh on their large-SUV plans.......a large SUV from BMW just sounds weird (just like Chrysler making a quality interior)......gives me that funny feeling, the same one I get when I realize Porsche makes tiny Corvette competitors AND SUV's.....and M-B makes a station wagon with more horsepower than your avg. Malibu or Camry.......

Yeah really?!? Sounds like a cool thing to say... but no one ever slammed a domestic manufacturer for trimming their lineup to fit current demand!

I'm not sure what you mean - but all automotive manufacturers should be canceling full-size SUVs. Maybe not every model. There will always be a need. But at least some of them.

Sorry Sal... I was agreeing with you... my English is getting worse by the day!

I was agreeing when you responded to the other person that no one is saying that a domestic manufacturer canning an SUV would be a bad idea. GM (and the rest) should be closely examining their large truck and SUV lineups... there will always be a need for these vehicles, and GM makes the best... but they'll play a smaller and smaller role as time goes on.

Right. Thank you.. How many full-size SUVs does GM really need? Before 2008, I felt all luxury manufacturers should have their own "Escalade". Now I think differently...

I am glad to see more manufacturers killing the idea of large suv/crossovers. It can't come a moment too soon!
