BMW 1-Series, Slated By Jeremy Clarkson

BMW 1-series
By Jeremy Clarkson of The Sunday Times

This car is taking BMW into dangerous territory

"The 1-series will be the ruination of the BMW brand. Of that I have no doubt. But at the moment, despite the lost vision and the appointment of Bangle, that ruination has not yet got into its stride. For now you can still buy a Beemer and survive the experience with your dignity intact. The question is, should you? And to answer that, we have to work out if the 1-series is any good."

Best Wishes.

Re: BMW 1-Series, Slated By Jeremy Clarkson

So, it's one bad review.

Oddly, I had a British friend who summed the Vauxhall line exactly the way this chap summarizes the 1-series: "Vauxhalls are crap."

Anyway, I bet if anyone can manage a move down-market, it will be BMW. I'm not invested in their success or failure, so I'm not too interested to see how this turns out other than to say that it will be more competition for the General.

I love reading British reviews like this - very witty, great diction. We'll see how this does. It can go either way. My guess is if it comes here, the American press would fawn all over it. However, I don't see much of a market for it really. Look at what happened in market studies for Nomad, a similar car. GM was ready to build it until it flopped in market studies.

Re: BMW 1-Series, Slated By Jeremy Clarkson

Joke of an article.

Going downmarket is always risky, but history shows it's not a less expensive car that kills a brand .. a cheap car kills a brand. Yet even the 318ti, which by most accounts was a cheap car, didn't do BMW any harm. The 1-series is a much better car than the -ti was, perfectly in-line with other models in the lineup today.

Open-trunk styling treatment is weak, as is the disconnection of drivers from driving. However, BMW's new styling themes are leading edge. Can't argue with the sales success.
