2008 Volkswagen R32 Spontaneously Combusts!

Quote:

And you wonder why VW became the most recalled automaker of 2007. An unlucky fellow in South Florida came back to his brand new 2008 Volkswagen R32 when he got off of work, discovering that the hot hatchback got a little too hot. In fact, it caught on fire

.....

The reason why a defect is suspected is because this isn't the first R32 to spontaneously combust.

$32K for an EFFING VW... he should have gotten a 2007 Cobalt SS/SC or MazdaSpeed3 and been done with it. They are damn near as fast, and with the SS he would have saved about $10K... used a 1/4 of that and modded the car to absolutely KILL the R32 on the track

Some people just love their Volkswagons though.

They are really fun to drive, but the quality is so awful. I see the occasional Beetle or Jetta get traded in and they always feel like they are about to fall apart or they end up needing well over $2,000 in work.

At least the switch gear is always tight and the ride and handling is top notch.

i like Vdubs but they are wayyyyy overpriced. no GTI should go over 27k, where most probably start at. Base should be about 22k (idk what it is and too tired to check) plus who doesn't like the seats in a GTI? They're soooo cool, and it has a HIGH quality interior, unlike the plasticy cobalt!

They have to be overpriced so they can pay all the service techs trying to rebuild the junk tht comes from their plants!

Is'nt the R32 AWD? That's prolly most of the price increase right there.

Now you guys know why I didn't buy a VW GTI and bought a Volvo instead.

The thought of actually owning a Volkswagen was just downright scary.

That's a nice safety feature to have in a V-DUBB!

The thing is though, not everybody wants to void a warranty by modifying their vehicle. I would much rather have something that performs from the factory, and still have the manufacturer cover it if something went wrong.

To be honest, GM needs to work on getting something very close to what VW is offering, and do it better! It would be great so see something along the lines of the Astra VXR. If what everybody is saying is true, quality-wise, the Astra should be able to kick-ass in that arena, and give performance close to what VW is offering.

Re: 2008 Volkswagen R32 Spontaneously Combusts!

The R32 has AWD and a N/A 3.2L v6.

Personally, I don't think the R32 is worth $32K, but I would go as far as to say that the R32 likely has more tuning and performance potential than the FWD Cobalt SS and Speed3 with boosted 4-cylinders.

The only bottleneck is the DSG in the U.S. R32. Its durability is sort of questionable. Offering a traditional 6speed manual for a tuner car would have made so much more sense.
