Nationwide COT - Mustang, Challenger, Impala...what happen to the Camaro?
Last week at TALLADEGA four manufactures revealed there COT for the Nationwide series. Which included the Ford Mustang, Dodge Challenger, Toyota Camry and Chevy Impala. Ford and Dodge out did themselves and created cars for the fans. The first time the cars have taken a step forward to really mirror the stock car without impacting safety. Meanwhile Chevy made no effort to offer the Camaro as their COT. Instead they came out with a disappointing Impala body style. Obviously Toyota has nothing to offer so they are out of the discussion. I have been watching NASCAR for many years and a great fan of the sport. What do you guys think?

Re: Nationwide COT - Mustang, Challenger, Impala...what happen to the Camaro?
You can definitely see a resemblance to the real car in the case of the Mustang & Charger. I'm glad for that. But not so thrilled with the looks of them as far as racecars go. They look like they're from another era IMO--not sexy fast like a modern racecar should look. Don't get me wrong though, I'm really glad that there's more than a few decals to distinguish them from one another and hope the "movement" catches on.
I don't know what GM was thinking with the Impala. Not only is it ugly, but it's uglier than the real thing--a first for NASCAR stock cars in my lifetime. On the other hand, having the Camaro out there may have added a little drama, but I don't think sales would be impacted at all by it. Which kinda makes me wonder why GM spends so much on NASCAR in the first place. |

Chevrolet said that they didn't want to do it since it wasn't really a Camaro, and that there were plenty of other places to see camaros race

Because GM didn't want to crunch the Camaro into a COT and have it end up looking like the Mustang COT.

These Nascar renditions look awful...........how could that help sell a Mustang or Challenger ??
Let the Camaros stay in series where the cars look somewhat like the street versions and have some relevence, SCCA World Challenge Series, Koni Challenge Series,FIA GT4 etc. |

I think the chevy impala would destroy all these competitors, due to what they have learned with the body style. But not a head turner.

I don't think Camaros or any pony cars belong in NASCAR. NASCAR has ALWAYS been about souped up standard/family cars, and it should remain that way. Let the ponys have drag and SCCA-type racing.

Re: Nationwide COT - Mustang, Challenger, Impala...what happen to the Camaro?
For me the ideal situation would be for Chevy, Ford, and Dodge to race real Camaro SS's, Mustang GT's, and Challenger SRT-8's with roll cages, reinforced bodies, and a standardized engine. I don't know what Toyota would race but I really don't care either.

For me, NASCAR should still only be for standards/family cars. Impala vs Taurus, vs Charger in Cup & Busch, and in the minors, Malibu vs Fusion vs Avenger.

Re: Nationwide COT - Mustang, Challenger, Impala...what happen to the Camaro?
Ok, fair enough. What would you think about the Nationwide Series running muscle cars instead of family cruisers? It seems like NASCAR has gotten really stale with the COT, boring racing, and drivers severely lacking personality. I'd like to see them try something different.

I still think the family cars should be there too, I just made a mistake and called the Nationwide series by it's old name, "Busch". Muscle cars are well represented in NHRA and other drag racing. The other stuff? Okay, I don't like the COT, I don't find the races boring, and as far as personalities go, one man's boring driver is another man's quiet professional, and I am of the later camp, so NASCAR works for me more or less the way it is.

You can't have "stock cars" in a stock car race - isn't that unAmerican or something!
