Ed Peper couldn't be happier with NASCAR!

INDIANAPOLIS -- Ed Peper is sitting on top of the world.

As general manager of Chevrolet, Peper is presiding over a first-class rout of NASCAR's top division. Chevrolets, both the Monte Carlo SS and its COT counterpart Impala SS, have captured 16 of 20 races so far this season. Chevrolet drivers occupy 10 of the 12 spots in the Chase, if it were to start today.

The opposition? Ford has won three races and has two in the Chase as we speak, and Dodge has won once and has no drivers in the top 12. Toyota hasn't sniffed Victory Lane yet, and likely won't the rest of the season.

Peper, fresh off another Allstate 400 at the Brickyard triumph on Sunday, sat down to talk about the season, his teams and the business of NASCAR.

Motorman: Aren't the Chevy teams running a new engine? R07? How much of this success do you think is due to that?

Minimal. Chevy has been pretty dominant the last few years now. The engine was just icing on the cake.

I have nothing against NASCAR, but the link to selling cars is dubious at best. The car that Chevy has been using for years not, the Monte Carlo, is being Canceled. Its successor, the Impala, is sold more to fleets than it is to retail customers.

I think the success is not due more to who the drivers are, and less to the engine. I'm pretty sure the Hendrick teams (notably Jeff Gordon and Jimmy Johnson) did not use the new engine for the first part of the year...when Gordon and Johnson won most of their 8 combined races.

Add to that the fact Chevy has Jeff Gordon, Jimmy Johnson, Dale Earnhardt Junior and Tony Stewart, and there is a lot of the reason right there. They account for 6 of the last 10-12 championships....and probably close to 150 wins combined over the past decade or so.

They could run Tahoes and Expeditions. That'd get the relevency factor up.
