Earnhardt Jr to drive #88

LOUDON, N.H. -- Fans who liked watching Dale Earnhardt Jr. in the No. 8 since he moved to the Nextel Cup series eight years ago will double their pleasure in 2008.

Earnhardt will drive two stylized 8s next season for Hendrick Motorsports, sources told ESPN.com on Friday.

Robert Yates Racing, sources said, has agreed to sell the No. 88 that Dale Jarrett drove to the 1999 championship.

The car, which sources said will be sponsored by Mountain Dew and the Amp energy drink, will be revealed for the first time at a Wednesday press conference in Dallas.

Earnhardt, who owns a Busch Series car with the No. 88, would not confirm the report.

"Everybody will have to wait 'till Wednesday," he said. "We looked at a lot of different options and we have a lot of different trademarks. People are pretty familiar with what we're looking at as far as that goes."

Earnhardt had hoped the No. 8 would follow him from Dale Earnhardt Inc. to HMS. But when he couldn't reach a deal with stepmother/team owner Teresa Earnhardt, he began exploring other options.

As many as seven numbers were considered, most of them containing an 8.

Re: Earnhardt Jr to drive #88

Anyone find it wierd that Jr's gonna drive a #88 Mountain Dew Chevy, same as what Darrell Waltrip drove, when he and Dale senior were not on the friendliest of terms?

I'll get over it. It is odd though. They ended up back as friends though, so I guess it will be fine.

I hope it's not sponsored by Mountain Dew considering Mt. Dew is disgusting

But cool! Close enough to #8 I guess

Well, at least now everyone who has an "8" tattoo can just add another 8 to it.

Didn't we get a report about Yates selling the 38? I wonder which it will be.

They confirmed it during the race at New Hampshire.

Actually, this is not entirely true. They had their moments on the track, but DW actaully gave Dale Sr. his first ride, and later in life, Dale Sr. returned the favor when DW was all but washed up, having him drive the #1 Pennzoil car when Steve Park was injured.

No sschr, it is pretty accurate to say that their friendship was strained during DW's Mt Dew sponsorship. They were friends in the beginning and DW helped Dale become a major competitor in the NASCAR series. Their friendship remained "on hold" until he went over to RCI. They reignited their friendship and remained buddies until Sr death.

What an ugly car! I thought they would do better than that.
