Re: RUMOR: G8 may be revived as a Chevy Caprice?(Confirmed? See page 10)
Forgive me for not reading all 28 pages, but would someone tell me if the Chevy G8 is coming or not?

Your middle name wouldn't be Lutz would it?
Maybe we could get one of the mods to change the title to remove the "confirmed" since it has now been OFFICIALLY denied.

Re: RUMOR: G8 may be revived as a Chevy Caprice?(Lutz retracts statement. G8=dead)
It should be restyled enough to differentiate it, name it the Grand National.

Re: RUMOR: G8 may be revived as a Chevy Caprice?(Lutz retracts statement. G8=dead)
I tried leasing a G8 and was told the "residuals were very low" requiring a HIGH lease payment. So I guess I might have to settle for a Camaro 1SS for well over $10K less that has 11 more h.p. and gets 26 vs. 20 on the highway. Damn, huh? Hopefully the trans output shaft will be okay.

Re: RUMOR: G8 may be revived as a Chevy Caprice?(Lutz retracts statement. G8=dead)
This question was posed to Mark Reuss on Autoline After Hours last Thursday. As the former ceo of Holden for the last couple years, he knows what is going on. He was asked this question and variations of it several times. He did not disclose exactly what GM's plan are, but the hints were very evident:
He said that it is a great car, widely sold, and recognized as being very good in all markets. He said that substantial changes were made in the G8 to turn it into a Camaro, especially in the cowl area. He said that Holden ran the necessary tests for the G8 front end crash testing, and could use that if the Chevy used the same front end; that could be done with badge engineering which he wasn't in favor of. He went on to say that it might be better if given a little time (off the market) that they could come out with something even better. He spoke about how small the actual car industry is in Australia, with a population of some 20 million people and 1 million annual sales in Australia. He spoke about sourcing of parts, and said the parts suppliers were very fragile in Australia. He said that an undertaking in North America is no small easy thing, with a need to make sure that (building it here) is really what they wanted to do, (which would include parts sourcing in North America.) He spoke about the effects of currency exchange rates. He said that the cars were overweight and that removing 125 pounds would be easy, while more than that would require the use of high-strength steel, aluminum and lightweight materials, while looking an panel cross-sections, welds, adhesives, and the like. He talked about the need to plan for gasoline to be in the $4-$5 a gallon range and CAFE needs. Having listened intently what what he said and their implications, I come to the somewhat the same conclusion I arrived at some months ago: GM will bring out car(s) based on the G8 zeta after they have determined that they could make money on the product, after they determined that they could source the necessary parts from NA suppliers (who would want guarantees as to volume before agreeing to do so), after putting the cars on a diet with updated design and powertrains. I would estimate that we are looking at 2012 as the introduction of those models, which could easily include updated suspensions' components to give a more agile handling dynamic. |
