300HP for Solstice?

Motortrend doesn't exactly have a great track record with rumors (Impala anyone?), but a bump to 300HP seems believable. Too bad it will still have a 5-speed manual as opposed to a 6-speed. A 6 speed would have got both better performance and batter gas mileage.

This will be a max. HP rating that can be held for a short burst. THis system is set to be part of ne camaro Monza concept drivetrain. utilizes dual boost programming. Very real possibility that it will be used in 2009 GXP model.

Hopefully that will not be the case, otherwise just leave the 260hp motor as is. In the Camaro Monza concept I understand why they would need to do that since the car is 400 lbs. heavier but in the Solstice it doesn't have to carry around as much weight so hopefully the overboost feature won't be needed

I believe from articles I have read, That this will give the vehicle a competitive HP rating to vehicles with bigger dispacement. I agree that this maybe more than necessary but with this extra available HP Solstice will get a return on the performance buzz. I do believe the additional structure with the Targa coupe will handle the extra boost very well. Fuel mileage should not be affected in normal driving situations according to dual programming.

Re: 300HP for Solstice?

I'm all for more hp but if the vehicle only gets short bursts of extra boost its kind of a short cut that I think is better left alone.

Imagine driving on some course somewhere and you've got full throttle and then all of the sudden the boost cuts down and so does your speed!

I would be disappointed myself.

Re: 300HP for Solstice?

Um, yes the Camaro Monza was an April Fools joke. Guess some people got it, some didnt.

Anyway, there have been rumors of the LNF going to 300hp to give some spread from the FWD version and RWD. The engine pushes 500hp for racing, so a simple easy bump to 300hp from 260 should be cake. Problem is fuel economy as well as emissions.

Re: 300HP for Solstice?

IMO, it's a short fix to get more buzz about the Solstice. It's nice, but what it really needs is a 6-speed manual, a simpler and more compact roof and a few lbs off.

At 19/28 for the current 260Hp mil, I think its the base version that needs better fuel economy.

Re: 300HP for Solstice?

300hp would be nice, but how about working a bit on a the packaging? I would love a Solstice except that the trunk is the size of a walnut with the top up and the size of a peanut with the top down. A suitcase and two people is pretty much out of the question, which pretty much rules out weekend trips and golf outings. The G6 convertible also suffers from the same problem.

Really, the only convertibles that GM makes with a decent sized trunk are the Saab 93, the Corvette, and the XLR - all of which are pretty expensive. I think I may end up in a Mustang GT, since it has a nice-sized trunk and the 'vette is just too much money.
