VM Motori diesels US bound in 2013

An Italian newspaper has published this interesting piece of news regarding the VM Motori plant in Cento (near Modena). Apparently they are hiring 300 people between engineers, technicians, and daily workers after receiving a specific request by SM to increase their output from 150 to 350/400 per day, by the end of this year.

This move, writes the newspaper, is direclty associated with SM's intention to introduce the diesel engines to the US in 2013.

Re: VM Motori diesels US bound in 2013

I wonder what displacement will be selected for these US bound VM Motori diesels!

IF ... they are after fuel frugality ... the engine will probably be <2 Liters. Power/performance 2.4~3.0 Liters.

There ia also the question ... whether these engines will utalize Fiat's MultiJet (and MultiAir) technologies.

This is going to be VERY interesting!!!

GM may NOT be the first to bring diesel competition to VW/Audi US after all!!!

Will Ford make the US diesel "jump"??? IF so, when?

Ford has the potential of "fast execution" but I think Chrysler/Fiat will be in the lead ... unless Mazda's SkyActiv-D is accelerated to the US. I thought the original plan was Japan summer 2012 then other markets. It appears that deliveries may begin this month in the EU.

Come to think of it Hyundia/Kia might be a US diesel surprise as well ... since their SkyActiv-D appears to be available in the EU ... if not now ... very soon.

And, of course, VW/Audi will up the stakes going into Euro Step VI in 28 months.

This is going to be an interesting "race" to watch! And, the clock has started!

GM needs to take advantage of its 50% ownership of this company. Seems like Penske sold its 50 percent share to Fiat...

GM and FIAT are the owners of VM motori, 50-50%.

But while Fiat is cooperating with VM in improving the 3.0lt diesel engine, I've never understood if and how GM is operating in VM. Fiat already asked GM to buy its stake in VM, but without known results.
So the 3.0 engine, though initially started by GM, at some point of development had its support missing... and press silence

    10/04/2012 2011: Sales Turnover +36%

For the second year in a row VM confirms the positive trend with a sales turnover increase of 36% compared to the previous year.
The growth is due to the launch of the all new V6 3.0L engine for the Grand Cherokee and LanciaThema sold in the European market, which received excellent feedback from the press and from the end users, and the new 2.8L Euro 5 engine installed on Jeep Wrangler and Lancia Voyager.
The company with more than 1100 employees, forecasts to invest in Research and Development more than 13% of its turnover.
Current plan for 2012 is to continue the positive trend and with the likely opening of the NAFTA market, which seems to be more receptive for diesel powertrains than in the past, an additional significant increase of sales is forecasted.

It's evident that VM is making profits mainly because of Chrysler/Fiat.

I can tell you with reasonable certainty the low/moderate production volume 3 Liter VM is an expensive engine compared to high volume <2 Liters ... possibly more than double the cost.

And ... I also speculate that it will be very difficult to meet Euro Step VI 130~140 gCO2/km [about 48 mpg(US) combined] with VM's 3 Liters diesel starting October 2014 ... just a little more than 28 months from now.

And BTW, what about Siemens working closely with Fiat in VM diesel engines for US?

Yeah but GM has been talking about it the longest. That has to count for something, right?

I just looked up the EU 3 Liter diesel Grand Cherokee.

It is rated 34 mpg(Imp) combined ... about 29 mpg(US) ... best guess US user experience would be about 15% below that ... or 25 mpg(US) average.

That is still better than many offerings in the class.

Re: VM Motori diesels US bound in 2013

I drove a VM 3.0 diesel-equipped Lancia Thema (Chrysler 300) a few days ago. It's a very reasonable, refined and modern diesel with great delivery accross the range. The antiquated automatic the Thema uses with the diesel is only a 5-speed, but you wouldn't tell - the delivery was so prompt and smooth. And very importantly - it's much quieter than its Pentastar counterpart coupled with an 8-speed. It's a great engine, up there with the class benchmarks, nothing to be ashamed of in front of VAG, BMW or Daimler engines here (I have to admit I have not been acquainted with the PSA/Jaguar 2.7 HDi yet, so perhaps that one is vastly better).

So the 2.0L diesel for the US Cruze will be made in Italy?

2.8 Liter 4-Cylinder Turbo Diesel Engine Component Machining + Assembly Line (Iveco 8140.43) for sale,
    Interesting indeed!

Well ... that seems to leave ≤2.4 Liter and 3 Liter diesels for light passenger vehicles.

Was that the same engine used in the CRD Liberty and Brazilian S10?
