Track Tested: 2007 Jeep Grand Cherokee SRT8 vs. 2009 Porsche Cayenne Turbo S

Quote:
The whole idea of a high-performance sport-utility vehicle is a little tough for us to swallow. It's a totally nonsensical concept, yet it continues to thrive even in the face of expensive gas and even more expensive vehicles.

That said, who wouldn't appreciate driving a 2-ton, four-wheel-drive vehicle that can run 13s in the quarter-mile? There aren't many that can, but we've tested two that impressed us.

Most recently, it was the 2009 Porsche Cayenne Turbo S that rolled through the garage and blew us away with its 550-horsepower V8. Then again, it should for $139,000. If your budget doesn't allow for such extravagance, the Jeep Grand Cherokee SRT8 is the next best thing. For a mere $45K, it offers a similar experience. How similar? See for yourself in our latest head-to-head match-up straight from the test track.

$45K
4.7 sec 0-60
13.4 sec 1/4 mile

$139K
5 sec 0-60
13.2 sec 1/4 mile

That about sums it up for me, chalk up a win for the Grand Cherokee SRT8 and the extra $94K you save.

Yea but is the leather in the Jeep hand-stitched?

I am actually a huge fan of sporty, and super fast SUVs....ever since I saw a GMC Typhoon as a kid.

The problem with the JGC is the fact the stupid exhaust pipes are right where the ball hitch mount should be. And then of course it doesn't look near as nice as the Porsche.

Having said that, $94k is a lot of loot saved.

You're not a fan of the exhaust on the SRT8?!?! I think its one of the coolest features, granted it does limit its functionality but I wouldn't tow anything with a SRT8 anyways.

As much as the exhaust looks cool on the JGC, its not a very practical place. I kinda wiush that the exhaust is mounted normally so that you can tow stuff.

As for the $94K saved I wonder what you can buy with that? A whole suburb in Detroit?

I agree, the Rear on the porsche does look better, but why show the rears only right?
The front of a vehicle is usually the most dramatic.

This looks good.

This looks Really Good!

That's a win.

Or....... lets see..... want to effectively triple mpg - such the rage these days so..... the SRT8, the s/c as per, and then a VOLT.

Put the rest towards an engine overhaul on the Bonanza and then - you can go faster more often - on less fuel.

A House subcommittee demanded today that Toyota account for several comments made by a U.S. executive Monday, saying his assurances ..... did not match what Toyota had told congressional staffer just a week ago.

"Toyota officials indicated that sticking accelerator pedals are unlikely to be responsible for the sensational stories of drivers losing control over acceleration as their cars race to 60 miles per hour or higher,"
