Our 1975 Pacer X was problemsome and the 6 Cyl got the fuel mileage of a 440 Six Pack, the last of our AMC's a 1976 Matador was the worst car I have ever seen. The dash actually fell off once while driving!

In 1978 the dealer my father dealt with, switch to Chevy/Olds, and I rember him driving by the front row after hours saying "Ilike this one" (a blue 78 Malibu Classic 2 door) but "I really like that 1" (a black Monte Carlo Landau) (without A/C).

Still to this day he says "That black car you bought frome me is the best car I have ever owned"

I for one who grew up never driving but it was "My Father's car" I would not be lining up for one of the first Pacers or Gremlins.
Funny. We had a green pacer that my folks bought as the "kids car".
Column shift. Like you said, pitiful gas mileage. Many visits to the repair shop.
