Re: Chrysler to Bring Back AMC Pacer

Well, at least a FWD neo-Pacer would be more true to the original design than the final production model. Other than that, why?

Rambler would be a more fitting line of ultra-affordable economy vehicles.

Re: Chrysler to Bring Back AMC Pacer

I remember AMC from my College days knew people that owned 2 Gremlins (so ugly it was actually cute). What most don't know with a 390 V8, the Javelin/AMX were rockets! Also AMC cars were absolutely "bulletproof" they ran and ran. The renderings are great.

However, the Pacer (Bubblegum machine) had too much glass, and was kind of frightening to be inside! The unequal sized doors were a novel design, also as I remember -- wasn't it also rather heavy?

Well, sure...a Gremlin with a 383 would be quick. But Gremlins came with no more than a 304 from the factory. And Javelin/AMXs had 304 and 390/401 engines.

Thanks Hudson:

It's been so long that I confused the Javelin/AMX engines with the Plymouth GTX, post updated.

Those drawings look better than most current Chrysler products.

That's sad, but true. This wouldn't be the worst idea for Chrysler. Altough putting out a product line that people want right now, is an even better idea, however.

it was very-very common to see people "upgrade" to 390's & 401's...

I knew of at least 3 personally from my dealer experiences...NOT from any book.

It wouldn't be the first time that a magazine article influenced production of a vehicle. That's how we got the re-emergence of the Stutz!

THAT would be cool! The drawings are great...if only they would make 'em!

I Speak as a person who's Family owned nothing but AMC's until 1978, I can assure you they were anything but "Bullet Proof" The 1968 and 1973 Ambassador we had were bullet proof. The used 1973 Gremlin we bought used as our first "second vehicle and first 2 door he bought since his 54 Buick Special" never had any problem but you could not walk after an 2 hour ride. Our 1975 Pacer X was problemsome and the 6 Cyl got the fuel mileage of a 440 Six Pack, the last of our AMC's a 1976 Matador was the worst car I have ever seen. The dash actually fell off once while driving!

In 1978 the dealer my father dealt with, switch to Chevy/Olds, and I rember him driving by the front row after hours saying "Ilike this one" (a blue 78 Malibu Classic 2 door) but "I really like that 1" (a black Monte Carlo Landau) (without A/C).

Still to this day he says "That black car you bought frome me is the best car I have ever owned"

I for one who grew up never driving but it was "My Father's car" I would not be lining up for one of the first Pacers or Gremlins.
