MyFord Touch getting second update, extended warranty

There is no doubt that Ford has had its hands full fielding complaints with its MyFord Touch and MyLincoln Touch systems these days, but looking to keep its customers happy, Ford is once again upgrading its infotainment systems and extending the warranties. Despite having just sent out updates for its systems back in March, Automotive News says that customers are still complaining about the speed and ease of use.

Vehicles with MyFord Touch will now get a five-year, unlimited-mile warranty, while the MyLincoln Touch will have a six-year, unlimited-mile warranty. Previously, the systems were covered under basic warranties (three-year, 36,000-mile for Ford and four-year, 60,000-miles for Lincoln).

What is being referred to as "version 3.5" for the MyFord Touch and MyLincoln Touch systems will be mailed out (or downloaded) next month for owners of cars without navigation and in January for cars with nav. Owners of hybrids, plug-ins and electric vehicles will get the update sometime in the first quarter of next year.

The update is said to improve voice recognition and navigation functions.

Nice to see them updating it. BUT I think the biggest complaint was the lack of buttons. I bet CR will still slam it.

The first upgrade made a huge difference in user friendliness both in voice recognition and in appearance. The voice interface for NAV and iPod in my '11 Explorer was successful maybe half the time before and I haven't had an issue since the upgrade. I also liked that the iPod controls offer "up" and "back" options that the first version didn't. The graphics improved slightly and are very good, but the MFT I saw in a Fusion at the auto show in Chicago had noticibly better resolution and/or detail. I'm kind of surprised that there aren't apps to customize the layout, design, and colors. I would love to be able to buy a Star Trek LCARS app, or one that displays info, such as the radio and HVAC, in analog gauges.

I've got an even better idea. And it's not just for Ford.

Stop using the public for guinea pigs. Quit releasing vehicles with gimmicky features that aren't ready for prime time.
