Ford Platforms

Ok, I know a little about FoMoCo's platforms The Volvo S80, Ford 500, and the Mercury Montego are all on the P40 I believe. What is the name of the platforms for the Mazda 3/next-gen Ford Focus, the Mazda 6/Fusion,Milan,and Zephyr. While we are at it what is the platform for the Explorer, the SportTrac, and the F-series. Any other Ford Platform would be cool.

Re: Ford Platforms

The senior Volvos (S60, V70, S80, XC90) are on the P2X platform, which is shared with the Ford Five Hundred, Mercury Montego, and Ford Freestyle. The new Mazda3, the current European Ford Focus (no word on the next-generation North American version), and Volvo S40/V50 are on the C1 platform. Unrelated to the above, the Ford Fusion, Mercury Milan, Lincoln Zephyr, and Mazda6 are on the CD1-3 platform (which is related to the current Ford Mondeo and Jaguar X-Type). The current Explorer (and upcoming Explorer Sport Trac) are on the U152 platform and the current Explorer Sport Trac is on the previous generation Explorer's platform (shared with the Ranger). The F-Series is split into two platforms: the light-duty F150 is on the PN96 platform while the heavier F250/F350/F450/F550 are on the PHN131 platform.

Re: Ford Platforms

This thread got me thinking about the old Panther platform again. I was wondering, disregarding the age of the Panther platform, would it be possible to have a modern body-on-frame car? Most trucks are obviously modern while being body-on-frame but would there be an advantage in Ford in always keeping the Crown Victoria BOF? Or would a unibody design eventually outweigh any major advantages, namely lower cost, in keeping the Crown Vic a BOF car?

This subject has been at the back of my mind for a while now. Much of it is because of the uncertainty of the future of a full-size, RWD Ford sedan. My current outlook on the matter is that Ford will upgrade the Panther platform enough to extend its longevity for a few more years and then totally replace the thing with another design (Australian Falcon, Mustang D2C, etc.). But, is it possible for the Panther to actually be upgraded to a point where it can be considered modern, but without abandoning its fundamental BOF design? For example, what can be done with the rear suspension? What about engines? Will a 5.4L V8 ever find its way under the hood of a Panther car?

I think the Mazda dreived Fusion platform is called CD3 and its not related to the current Mondeo/Jaguar platform which is built on a CD132 platform, they even use different suspension designs etc.

But there are plans for the next generation Mondeo to migrate to the Mazda 6 platform.

The current Mondeo is derived from the original Mondeo's platfrom
Quote:
The current model, slightly longer, but based on the original Mondeo's floorpan and running gear was launched in 2000. It is much more distinctive than the bland 1993 original, borrowing styling cues from the smaller Focus, and sporting a much more upmarket interior and higher standard of build quality influenced by Volkswagen's Passat.
Ford Focus(Euro)/ Mazda 3/ Volvo S40 = C1
Escape/Tribute = CD2
Ford mondeo = CD132
Ford Fusion/ Mercury Milan/ Lincoln Zephyr = CD3
Ford Falcon = EA169
Lincoln LS = DEW98
2005 Ford Mustang = D2C
Ford Freestar = V2
Ford Crown Victoria/ Mercury Grand Marquis = Panther

Ford Fivehundred/Mercury Montego = D3

AG3:

The current Mondeo/X-Type and Mazda6/Fusion/et al are more closely related than you might think.

And the original name of the Five Hundred's Volvo-derived platform was P2X.

Re: Ford Platforms

Despite the fact that nobody mentions it much, C1 is just an evolution (although a pretty serious one) of the old Focus platform too.
