Ford Bid for UAW Concessions Dims as Rejections Mount at Plants

Oct. 30 (Bloomberg) -- Ford Motor Co. hourly employees at three more factories rejected union contract concessions, dimming the automaker’s prospects for winning the givebacks granted to U.S. competitors.

The results mean that workers at 11 plants representing 16,300 United Auto Workers union members have turned down the deal, compared with approvals at 4 facilities with 6,100 employees. Ford has 41,000 workers represented by the UAW, whose leaders negotiated the accord.

Ouch. No wonder the Fiesta is heading to MX for assembly*. Way to put yourselves out of work, guys.

*(but really, with a name like "Fiesta," Mexico is entirely proper)

The UAW are a bunch of idiots and I really hope that they get what's coming to them one day. I can't believe they are trying to strangle a company that is now just STARTING to show signs of life.

Ford got partially screwed in all of this by not declaring bankruptcy. Very ironic! Very sad!

This is a hazard of Ford being the media's favorite pony right now.

Spend time on the employee forum, on BON, and get even more pissed off.

Frankly, some of the rhetoric is pretty sickening. Expect to see a strike against Ford, in 2011.................. especially if Ford is even making 1 PENNY of profit. The UAW will be expecting to have all of their perks, and COLA's reinstated, plus some profit sharing.

I think the only way that the UAW would be happy, is if they forced Ford into Chapter 11. That way, they would be showing all of us, how powerful they are. It's pathetic.

I say send the cars to Mexico and Canada, but then they would just try to take GM hostage next. These guys will never cease to amaze me how stupid they are.

Re: Ford Bid for UAW Concessions Dims as Rejections Mount at Plants

If anyone cant see a major strike coming in 2011 then you are blind. The UAW feels screwed with the 'concessions' they have made. I fully expect some of the whacky perks to be reinstated in the next contract or else...........

Maybe they should return some of their profits from the portion of GM/Chrysler they got to the stock/bonholders that got screwed if they feel like they 'lost' in the BK.......

I think we need to face the fact that a line worker job is not an upper middle class job anymore. Production facilities can be put up anywhere in the world and serve the global auto industry. No one is stating you need to work for $2 an hr, however the old days of guarenteed pay raises and high levels of pay have most likely ended.

I thought those notorious Ford fans said that the UAW was willing to agree to the same things as GM?

Can't say I didn't tell you so.

Fusion and Fiesta are built in Mexico for a single reason and it ain't labor cost. It's free trade agreement Mexico has with South American countries. In Brazil, for example, a EU built cars get slapped with as much as $4k in tariffs; US built ones with about $2k. Mexico built cars are sold without any penalty.

Thank your congress person.

GM went bankrupt, Ford didn't.

Are you suggesting Ford should declare bankruptcy?

Somehow they think that allows them room to bargain with Ford...

I can't see Ford rolling over on this issue too easily.
