Question Torque converter shudder? 1996 0lds 88

96 Olds 88 3800 4spd automatic- Had a shudder when climbing hills in overdrive. Had tranny flushed and shudder disappeared. Now 1 year later shudder returns and is obviously torque converter failing to complete or stay in lock-up. Driving straight and level lockup engages, rpm drops and after a while it shudders and drops out of lock up. Sometimes stays in lockup properly other times barely tries to lockup. Is my torque converter shot or could it be a sensor, control, plugged filter or something else less serious than a replacement? Shifting gears 1-overdrive is acceptable and unchanged. No leaks, slow shifting or other signs of problems. Tranny oil is clean and no burnt smell. Getting occasional check engine light. Insight and help much appreciated.

I think a 96 is too old for the PCM reprogram, whichfixes one shudder issue...

Otherwise I'd guess the pressure control solenoid inside the transmission might be of issue...

Sometimes a flush with new fluid, which is liekly more viscous aided the issue temporarily...

I had the same issue with a 98 Park Avenue...

Thanks, that sounds reasonable. Next question: How accessible is the solenoid valve and how to determine if faulty? Is is straight electrical/electronic controlled or is there a vacuum sensor involved too?

It's on the valve body under the side cover!

Just put some friction modifier and forget about it.

I don't know if it's available at a GM dealer, but it's at the Ford dealerships and any transmission shop.

No, it won't hurt anything either.

Really? I can't recall ever having to do anything other than using it again at the next service.

You gotta get the real stinky stuff. The stuff that makes you dry heave.

How ya been?

Thanks for the tips. A local tranny shop said 8 hours plus parts to replace the solenoid. Hmmm. They also said the had an extreme additive that sometimes will work. $900 labor or try the additive....... okay try the sticky stuff. Thanks for your help.
