steering wheel control switch lights

I have a 2004 Suburban, 5.3, auto trans, Bose sound system. The lights in the contol switches in the steering wheel for the sound system have gone out one-by-one over the last 3 weeks. What does it take to change them? Do the switches need to be replaced or just bulbs? I know them by feel but the wife hates not seeing them.

You have to change the switches. Easy to do.

Re: steering wheel control switch lights

Does it involve removing the wheel or do they snap in and out?

They must snap in and out. The warranty labor time is only .2

Re: steering wheel control switch lights

they are a pain in the ass. easy to get out, you dig them out with a pick or a small screw driver, but getting the wire harness to plug in the back of them is a trick. so the .2 for warranty just like all other warranty times sucks ass.

problem is, the harness for them is only long enough for them to pull out, you cant see what your doing, and unless you can finagle the harness back into the switch its going to be fun. ive broken a few connectors trying to get the damn things back in the switch. at that point, then you get a new harness, and extend the current harness so it is a reasonable length.

why is it so hard to just add in another 1-2 inches in the harnesses? is it honestly that much more effort. i mean, am i wrong here? WTF? GM. i dont think it would affect anything if they added in a couple inches. i did it in 5 minutes, they could have done it from the factory and saved alot of people a headache. but oh no, just like everything else, it has to be stupid.

Re: steering wheel control switch lights

So, if I took the Burban to the dealership, and told them to replace the switches, are they going to use the .2 labor or is there a different labor time for non-warrenty effort?

Re: steering wheel control switch lights

probably close to 1 hour for multiple switches. not 100 percent sure.

warranty time is what GM pays, so everyone is screwed on that deal.

If you have a 90 degree pick for use in trannys you can change those easily, just hook the wire and pull it into switch.can be hard to get it lined up but is easier than pulling the wheel

Re: steering wheel control switch lights

even if you pull the wheel, the harness going to the switches is only so long, so it will probably hurt you more than help.
