re: ecotec 2.2L timing belt pulley orientation

I just replaced the timing belt on my 2001 2.2L. ecotec engine with the aid of a "repair manual." It said the two cam (pips/notches) point to two (notches/seams) on timing cover flange {approx. 12 o'clock on each** and the crankshaft (pip/notch) pointing to a similar (notch/seam) on the coverflange (approx. 6 o'clock) yet engine wont start!!!!!! I need to know ; if this orientation is correct . when I cranked the engine it appeared to have compression but it sounds 180 out to me! This is the first ecotec i've had, the manuals in my experience arent always reliable. Example... my "unamed," AIR COOLED vw manual includes a whole chapter devoted to the inspection and maintenance of the radiator and cooling system, including the recomendation to use 50/50 water & anti-freeze???!!!! Hence the mistrust of such reference materials, furthermore I dont have any ecotec brains to pick in my circle of chev-porsche-veedub freinds! This is why I have turned to YOUR expertice on this subject ! PLZ help with timing gear diagram or other explanation

The first Ecotec (L61) was first placed in the Saturn LS1 in 2000. Tailwhip, curious, how many miles are on your engine? Very curious as to why you are performing this lengthy job too. Ecotecs do have timing chains (http://www.ecotecforum.com/forums/showthread.php?t=672) and unless they break, no replacement should be needed untill you reach around 125,000-150,000. Some people don't even bother to change them and have more than that.

Re: ecotec 2.2L timing belt pulley orientation

When I did the belt on my neon I had the marks lined up perfect. I rotated the engine by hand, it hit. I didn't have the crank at the same spot as the cam. I took the belt of rotated the engine 360 I think then it was fine.

I hope you don't have an interference fit engine.

Re: boat anchor

I have no idea what this lump came out of I found it in a local scrap metal yard ,purchased it priced by weight ! then i found an ecotec ecu in a malibu at an auto recycler.I built a wiring harness (bare bones) borrowed my spare powermaster alternator & aeromotive belt drive fuel pump on some homemade angleiron brackets and slung the ($150 total investment) mill on the back of my (ex-class 5 ,circa. 1983 ) baja bug , as a substitute for my race prepped motor (2180cc, 14.5/1 compression ,type 3) this worked fine (for a pump gas engine) for about two months, then it started making this sound that I would describe as if there were a handfull of loose nuts and bolts in the crank case !!! Turns out the idler pulley had disintegrated and was was being thrown around the inside of the timing cover by the still functioning belt I am almost certain that this motor is finished now after replacing the timing belt ,both idler pullys & tensioner. I apparently oriented the pulleys correctly yet it would not start! thats when I wondered if the directions that I had followed could have erred and came here for advice before I went any further. Puzzled by the fact that the motor sounded fine , only it wouldnt start I checked the timing with a light and it was dead on then I pulled a plug OMG!!! it was coated in oil ! so I cleaned four oil drenched spark plugs and tried again and it ran for one day!? Unfortunatly it won't start any more !!!! Rebuilding ,if new parts are needed I am unsure of its practicallity if any one has any opinions I would appreciate them.
