PCM after engine swap...CASE relearn???

I swapped an engine into my car. The only thing that has changed is the fact that the donor engine has a new crankshaft position sensor and is still using its old harmonic balancer. I did not change anything PCM related.

Do I still need to do a CASE relearn procedure?

Yes, any time the crank sensor is disturbed you need to do a CKP relearn, I'd say swapping an engine would most definitely count.

It does run well, but gas mileage is not all that great.

Have you ever experienced a time when a CASE relearn screws up something? Just curious.

No, I have done many hundreds of CKP relearns and never had a problem because of it. Not running it can cause idle and performance troubles.

Got it done yesterday. Basically, someone with an OBD computer that is capable of doing the CASE relearn is all that's needed for the relearn. Not any OBD scanner will do, as most are just that: scanners. They do not have the more advanced datastream capabilities in order to communicate with your car's powertrain PCM.

Huh? I just got it done at a local mechanic who had an OTC Genesis II.

Wow, thats news to me... I'm pretty sure this can only be done on GM cars with a Tech II... Are you sure he did it? Most of the "third party" scanners can only read the PCM, they can't write to it.

No, I did it for sure. I've done it about 3 times; twice using a Snap-On tool, and this time using the Genesis OTC tool. You are correct, as I mentioned in my last post, that 3rd party scanners mostly cannot write to the PCM; they can only read it. But most of the higher end ones from Snap-On or Genesis can write the PCM; this is why usually I have to go searching for a mechanic who actually has a scanner that can write the PCM.

I actually stood there when the mechanic was doing it. It did actually write the PCM, and when the CASE learn procedure was done, it said "CASE learn procedure complete". So it did it for sure. Also, I'm getting a bit better gas mileage now.

Do you know what other functions this scanner can do? There are lots of us in the Caddy community who are looking for a "reasonably" priced scanner for our cars... We have a high end snap-on one at work I will have to borrow it to see what it can do...

Do you know if your scanner can talk to the BCM too? reprogram Key Fobs? Theft lock on the radios? Name in the "wake up display in the dash?"

Tech II's normally run about $4000-4500... plus you need a gm tech to install all of the latest patches from GM HQ

HPTuners is a scanner/tuner which allows you to change timing, speed limiters, fueling, etc. It's big in the 3800 community and I'm pretty sure it will work on your application.

But I think HPtuner are good for a couple of VIN numbers. I'm not positive so don't rip me a new one. Those HPtuners are sick if you have a GTP motor. I read alot on those from GTP forums. ZZP parts & hptuner = masive power

I'm waiting for someone to come out with some software and an adapter for OBDII for a laptop that can perform bi-lateral communications so you can control output functions for EVAP tests, power balance, & ABS BCM etc... without spending $1000's on scan tool.

I have a DHP PowrTuner and I can tune any car I want thats compatible with it as many times as i please. PowrTuner is another good tuner/scanner but i think its only for OBDII V6 GMs until ~2004. The trick with HPTuners is that you need to buy a credit for each car that you plan to tune. So if you only plan on doing your own car, there's not much to it. But as you say, its very beneficial to the L67 cars since we need to constantly scan for knock and fuel trims when dropping pulley sizes so we dont chip any pistons.
