New keys don't even use metal.

Chrysler's new keys are 100% plastic with a chip board in them, called a fob. So are the Corvette and STS keys

The metal key you get with those is ONLY to unlock the door and can be reproduced by any key cutting place (as long as they have the right size key).

If you lock the door with the metal key and the "alarm" is active, the car will go nuts (horn blaring, lights flashing). unlocking the car with a valid fob or starting the car with a valid fob and driving off "turns off" the alarm.

You still look stupid when you unlock your own car with the metal key, and the alarm goes off.

You know how much those keys cost to make? $1. That's it.

And if you know how to unlock your ignition module with security (over diagnostics) then you can program your own damn keys.

I can program keys on Chrysler cars within the last 5 years (my software tools only go back that far), as long as you know the Ingition Module PIN and have a "Blank" Key.

GM dealers should be able to read the VATS resistor code...or you can test the resistance of the key blank...see: VATS Q&A

Thank you.

With the changes that GM does and the name it calls them, it is difficult for me to stay informed.

To extend the question, what key system is in my 03 Savana cargo van?
