Re: If you need to get keys cut by code

Sounds reasonable to me. If my car was stolen because someone jotted down the VIN (which is plainly visible at the base of the windshield) and the dealer made a key without asking for any identification, I would certainly consider them an accessory.

This is why I like keypad keyless entry. I never have to worry about being locked out. It's nice to be able to leave the car running with the doors locked when I stop for coffee on a cold morning. And when I go to the beach, I can just lock the keys inside instead of trying to cleverly hide them in my shoe like everyone else.

I don't understand why it never caught on. Aside from mid-80s Maximas, it seems to strictly be a Ford thing. I wonder if they hold a patent on it, or if other companies just don't think it's worth offering.

Re: If you need to get keys cut by code

Went to my PBG dealer yesterday b/c I needed a spare key made and the guy behind the counter said I needed to bring the title with me and then he would make the key. I said cool no problem. Today I go in w/ the title and tell another guy behind the counter I need a key cut and he cuts it for me, says it will be $37.00, and have a nice day. Not once did he ask to see ownership documentation.

Great idea, but where do you get a key with no chip. The local key maker has nothing that will match the chip key blank.

I have unchipped versions of all GM-chipped keys...except for the GTO which is uber-unique in the US...

They are out there...I get lots of requests for such for wallets...I've custom grinded certain keys for customers so they could hide them or alike...

This passkey thing is a load of crap to get you to have to go the dealer for keys. I can't imagine this "system" keeping professional thieves from doing whatever it is they want to do with your car. It's total BS that a new key cost upwards of $60.00.

Hardware stores near me have the GM passkeys...

Actually VATS & PassKey have cutdown on thefts, at least in my little corner of the world!

If you think GM is bad with this, then don't look at GM's competition!

Trust me on that one!

Hehe. Try Lexus. $95 for a key or so said my locksmith friend while discussing this subject.

They'll go back 14-18 years depending on model...no matter the division.

That part is irritating for sure, but would you prefer to have this and make it at least somewhat harder for someone to steal your car? Anything that makes it harder makes it take more time to get past it. That is a deterrent in itself. Cars that are easier to steal are stolen a lot more, ask any car theif. I had a Honda, was quite easy to steal, and once it was stolen that is the last one I will ever have. Didn't help that the only thing the police did at the time was take the report, nothing else was done. When it was found all they did was tow it and call me to tell me they had it.

Re: If you need to get keys cut by code

So, then, what system do I have in my 98 Lumina LTZ and 95 Grand Prix that has the resistor between the last pin cut and the plastic head?
What is involved in getting additional keys for that system?
