Exclamation If you need to get keys cut by code

A word of advice for everyone...many states now have strict laws regarding locksmiths & dealers in code cutting keys for people. For example, if I were to cut a set of keys for someone with a VIN# when they walk up to my parts window, stating they are locked out, or they lost their only set and I do it without seeing the title & driver's license and verifying ownership that way, or without a law enforcement officer authorizing such, if that car/truck/etc gets reported stolen, I, the person that cut the key could be charged with an accessory to grand theft!

I suggest if you decide to travel, or you commute for your school or work, and you DON'T have sufficient duplicate keys, please obtain your vehicle key codes, no matter what kind of car ot truck you own...it may save you LOTS of hassles in the long run.

    Makes sense.
At my dealership, if you need an extra key made, you must show proof of ownership and identyity.
Because my car is a lease, they needed a letter from the leasing company as well, since I'm not full owner.

In my dealer we only sold cut keys if the car was sold here and when the person who requires it give us a letter and an ID copy for our records.
But as a matter of fact its not against the law here in Mexico.

Amen brother...It happened to me!! I was on a trip and stopped for gas in W Va. Went to pay for the gas and get a soda and came out with no keys...they were in the ignition. Onstar may seem like an item that "I'll never use", right up until you do need them!!

I don't travel with the title. Registration yes but vehicle title - no. And I don't reccommend that people carrying the title with them. Have that stolen and the thief can dispose of your car very easily.

Correct...all the more reason to have an extra key when travelling...

Re: If you need to get keys cut by code

    Hi All,
New to this forum I googled this forum and another. I posted a message on the other forum yesterday and did not get a reply yet
Seems like this one is more active
    Question about keys;
I bought a used in mint condition 2005 Uplander (15602 kms) several months ago and was wondering if that model was supposed to have a master key?
The two keys that came with it looks identical.
There was no 2005 manual in it so they gave me a 2006 manual saying it is 99% the same word for word. But I noticed that in the 2006 manual it mentioned something about a pass key III . Is that only in the 2006 models and up?
I am going to check with the local dealer here for an extra key now though.

    Thanks in advance
    Ed

By master key they mean an original. Some of the older Buick's had a valet key that only started the vehicle and opened the door but not glove box or trunk. Passkey III is the security system they have had on GM vehicles for sometime now. A key could run you a pretty penny though.

    PASS-Key® III Operation

Your vehicle is equipped with the PASS-Key® III (Personalized Automotive Security System) theft-deterrent system. PASS-Key® III is a passive theft deterrent system.

The system is automatically armed when the key is removed from the ignition.

You do not have to manually arm or disarm the system.

The security light will come on if there is a problem with arming or disarming the theft-deterrent system.

When the PASS-Key® III system senses that someone is using the wrong key, it shuts down the vehicle's starter and fuel systems. The starter will not work and fuel will stop being delivered to the engine. Anyone using a trial-and-error method to start the vehicle will be discouraged because of the high number of electrical key codes.

If the engine does not start and the security message comes on, there may be a problem with your theft-deterrent system. Turn the ignition off and try again.

If the engine still does not start, and the key appears to be undamaged, try another ignition key. If the engine still does not start with the other key, your vehicle needs service. If your vehicle does start, the first key may be faulty. See your dealer/retailer or a locksmith who can service the PASS-Key® III to have a new key made.

It is possible for the PASS-Key® III decoder to learn the transponder value of a new or replacement key. Up to 10 keys may be programmed for the vehicle. This procedure is for learning additional keys only. If all the currently programmed keys are lost or do not operate, you must see your dealer/retailer or a locksmith who can service PASS-Key® III to have keys made and programmed to the system.

See your dealer/retailer or a locksmith who can service PASS-Key® III to get a new key blank that is cut exactly as the ignition key that operates the system.

    To program the new key:

Verify the new key has PK3 stamped on it.
Insert the original, already programmed key into the ignition lock cylinder and start the engine. If the engine will not start, see your dealer/retailer for service.
After the engine has started, turn the key to LOCK/OFF and remove the key.
For vehicles first sold in Canada, repeat step 2 with a different, already programmed, key before proceeding to step 4.

Insert the key to be programmed and turn it to ON/RUN within 10 seconds of removing the previous key.
The security message will turn off once the key has been programmed. It may not be apparent that the security message went on due to how quickly the key is programmed.

Repeat Steps 1 through 4 if additional keys are to be programmed.
If you are ever driving and the security message comes on and stays on, you will be able to restart your engine if you turn it off. Your PASS-Key® III system, however, is not working properly and must be serviced by your dealer/retailer. Your vehicle is not protected by the PASS-Key® III system at this time.

If you lose or damage a PASS-Key® III key, see your dealer/retailer or a locksmith who can service PASS-Key® III to have a new key made.

Do not leave the key or device that disarms or deactivates the theft deterrent system in the vehicle.

Re: If you need to get keys cut by code

Sounds reasonable to me. If my car was stolen because someone jotted down the VIN (which is plainly visible at the base of the windshield) and the dealer made a key without asking for any identification, I would certainly consider them an accessory.

This is why I like keypad keyless entry. I never have to worry about being locked out. It's nice to be able to leave the car running with the doors locked when I stop for coffee on a cold morning. And when I go to the beach, I can just lock the keys inside instead of trying to cleverly hide them in my shoe like everyone else.

I don't understand why it never caught on. Aside from mid-80s Maximas, it seems to strictly be a Ford thing. I wonder if they hold a patent on it, or if other companies just don't think it's worth offering.

Re: If you need to get keys cut by code

Went to my PBG dealer yesterday b/c I needed a spare key made and the guy behind the counter said I needed to bring the title with me and then he would make the key. I said cool no problem. Today I go in w/ the title and tell another guy behind the counter I need a key cut and he cuts it for me, says it will be $37.00, and have a nice day. Not once did he ask to see ownership documentation.
