Question Four wheel drive problem 2000 gmc sierra

Hi there I have a 2000 GMC Sierra(new body style) 1500 4x4 with electronic push button 4wd with auto mode. I work in construction and need the 4x4 almost everyday. A couple times a week the 4wd doesn't engage, it just stays in 2hi, or it will even go into 4hi and get stuck in 4hi. If I play with it long enough it will eventually shift. The "Service 4wd" Message will also appear quite often also. Are there problems with the 4wd actuators in these trucks?
Any help would be great. Thanks

The switch was kind of troublesome in the early GMT900's.

An actuator would not go into 4x4, not come out of it.

Is it easy to confirm the problem with a multy-meter?

The dash switch and the one on the transfer case have exactly the same symptoms.

Sorry for the delay, I had to go do an Under Coating Package.

I am not sure how to diagnose them, but I know we changed alot of them from 200-2003 while I was selling GM's
    Probally 4-1 Transfer Case motors.

The tccm will set a code, which turns on the SVC 4WD light, 9 out of 10 with the symptoms you mentioned it is a switch. The only way to start the diag process is to know what code is set, then go from there. You need a Tech 2 to read TCCM codes.
If it were me, I would buy the switch and cross my fingers. I remeber it being relatively cheap considering the other alternatives.
