First oil change question - 2013 Equinox

I am an old man from the old school and religiously followed the advice of engineers and mechanics to change the oil on a new vehicle after 1000 miles. Now the current thinking is that modern day engines are made to exacting tolerences and no longer need an early filter and oil change to remove metallic particles.

Not sure if GM uses a special break-in oil on its new vehicles, if so, early oil change would be self defeating.

Would like forum members thoughts on this topic.

I'm pretty extreme - an while not officially an old man I am often old-thinking.

If it were my car I'd make the first change when the oil life minder displayed 50%.

Modern oils, such as the Dexos 1 in your Equinox, can go a very long time.

I run Mobil 1, which is Dexos 1 rated, in all of my motors (lawn mower and show thrower included).

I've yet to run into an engine failure that was linked to oil.

I have seen engines damaged by too many oil changes, such as caused by striped drain bolts, improperly tightened or even wrong filters, dry start-up and low oil level.

My preference is around 2500 miles.
Oil analysis shows low TBN by then, still above min specs but getting low.

Re: First oil change question - 2013 Equinox

This topic can bring out all kinds of opinions, so watch out.

Personally, I understand that today's engines are incredibly well built right out of the factory and an early oil change is not recommended. But, being "old school," I changed my '05 CTS-V's oil at 500 miles and again at about 2500 miles and now average about 3500 miles between changes ... all Mobil 1. It's like chicken soup: it can't hurt.

Use the Dexos in the Equinox. Change around 3500-4500.

If you plan on keeping the vehicle long-term, follow the oil recommendations for severe usage, but I would suggest your first oil change at 1,000 miles, then follow severe usage recs after that.

My thanks and gratitude to all responders. Although most, if not all, are not in the elder age group, many share old school thinking on initial oil change.

Re: First oil change question - 2013 Equinox

    I have a 2013 Equinox. with the 3.6L V6.
I changed out its factory oil at about 1500 miles.
    I replaced with Pennz Platinum.
I will change this oil when im somewhere at 4500 to 5000 miles.
I will then have a UOA done on this oil with TBN.
I want to get a sense for the OLM accuracy.
THough I know that the iron will be a little higher based on the engine still in the wear in period.

this is how I figured out my 2010 OLM in the Traverse--- was not accurate.
most were going 10,000 miles by 0%.
But my UOA showed that 5000 miles/50% olm- the dino oil was reaching a point were it was still ok--- but better to change out.

so I made my changes to be 50%/5000 miles a safe place to change oil.
