Duplicate Key programing (Not the Remote)

I have a 2007 GMC YUKON XL, with OnStar Service. I NOW have ONE Remote and One Original Transponder key.........I have misplaced my 2nd set of keys!!!....... I am going to buy a DUPLICATE Transponder Key from my local Lock Smith, who will cut it to match the origial one. I don't need another (2nd) remote---- I think I can get along with just one. He has the blank Transponder key in stock. "At age 77, my daughter says I'm allowed to screw-up once in a while." HaHA.

Neither he nor I know how to "program" this new duplicate key.

Can someone please advise me what has to be done to be able to use this 2nd (duplicate) key.

This lock smith will do it for $31.00 the local dealer wants twice that amount.

Edit: The $31.00 is for the key, cutting it and programing it.

I think you just take your original key, put it in the ignition, turn it to the ON position ( but do NOT start the vehicle), turn back the key and remove....now place in your newly cut key and do the same. If that doesn't work, let me know and I'll check with the techs here.

Yes, I thought so too.....they do give instructions on How to Program a duplicate Remote Key Fob, but not how to do a New Key. Thanks anyway.

This is exactly how you do it.

Not that this would make any difference but on the Jeeps you need both keys to program. You put 1 key in, turn to ACC, remove, put new key in turn to ACC, remove, put 2nd original key in and start car and the program is complete.

Just wanted to point that out in case using 1 key doesnt work. If you only have 1 with a jeep you need to go to the dealer.
