    Dim dash lights

1996 Cavalier Z24. Problem first appeared this morning. Dash lights seem dimmer than normal. Dimmer switch is in the full on position. Headlights seem to be at normal intensity. Battery checks OK. Alternator is spinning (haven't tested yet.) Car was operated for about an hour this morning, with multiple restarts, and no problems. Checked fuse. Looks OK. Am I missing anything?

I don't think that its a bulb, as all dash lights are on (just dim). The dash has four separate bulbs. It also is affecting the HVAC area.

Dirty contacts on the dimmer switch? Malfuctioning switch?

Not sure how to test this. Using the switch, it does seem to have a full range of motion, just the maximum is dimmer than in the past. That is my thought currently, but just don't know how to test.

I'd get some contact cleaner and spray it in the switch and move it arond back and forth a bunch. Make sure you're getting it into where the contacts are not just spraying the outside of it. As for testing the switch, you would do a resistance test with the lead removed, but I don't know what the resistance should be at full power.

    Re: Dim dash lights

Well, evidently, the problem was the alternator (or at least more likely now) as I broke down on the way home on the freeway. Had it towed to my nearest dealer, and waiting to hear the bad news on cost. Being that my dealer has closed, this will be my first dealings with them. We will see...

    Re: Dim dash lights

Thanks. It was just the alternator, and was replaced at a reasonable cost. Dealer could take a few lessons in customer service, but overall, an average experience. Now, hopefully, no more tows.
