I would make sure the battery wasn't discharged when you disconnected it.

Hello, guys and thanks for your replies.
Battery is new and good, it was just disconnected. Starter doen't turn.
But dealer states, that 'transmission control unit' or something like this needs to be replaced.
Can you believe it? I don't.
    Please advise.

Sounds like they are saying that your transmission lockout is bad. Thats the thing that ssends the signal that the car is actually in park so that you can start it. When something goes wrong with this it wont start since it appears to the system that the car is not in park.

Try turning the key on and moving the shift level back and forth between drive, neutral, etc. a few times. It could do the trick. Considering this happened after the battery was disconnected I would be a little suspicisous myself. Even a small power surge can be damaging to the computer so....

    Sounds pretty logical.

Does your car have an over-ride for the shift lockout? I know some cars do, but I may be mistaken as to how it works, if even equipped. Scour your owners' manual once more.

I'd also, if you haven't already, just run through your fuse box to make sure you haven't popped any. I'm not thoroughly familiar with the Cobalt's electricals, but it's worth a quick check before sending it to the dealer.

And, to echo an unanswered question, what were you doing with the battery?

It isn't that this act should do this, but if you had possibly dropped a cable on top of another, crossed terminals, or kept quickly connecting and disconnecting the lead, things can go screwy.

    Re: Cobalt won't start

What was done to the car? Was a repair or modification the reason to disconnect the battery?

    More insight, please!

    Re: Cobalt won't start

I'm sorry for missing maybe the most important part: car was in an accident.During the towing back home, the battery was disconnected by tow truck driver just as precaution.
I tried to move gear selector back and forward several times - did not help. Also, I checked all fuses - all OK.
So, I think you're perfectly right that transmission lockout is bad.It might be demaged as a result of the accident(actually, heavy collision with the bus - so you could image the circumstances).
    Thank you very much.
