Checking the fluid in a 4T40E w/o a dip stick

Hey everyone, i have a 02 pontiac sunfire 2.2L w/ a 4T40E transmission, i have already replaced the trans once due to spider gear detonation and i would kinda like to make this one last. Can anyone give me some tips on how to check the fluid in it?

Re: Checking the fluid in a 4T40E w/o a dip stick

there is a plug located under the car, it is in the trans case, its an 11mm hex head bolt, it is where you check the level at, located by the right side output shaft, about 1-2 inches above and forward of the right side half shaft. located on the right side of the trans, transverse and parallel to the axle shaft.

when you locate it, start the car, idle in park, remove the plug, if fluid comes out then let it run out a bit, to drain a bit off. if nothing comes out, then it needs to be topped off, you top it off with the cap that is located on top of the trans, about where the air filter box is located, in between the engine and the left side fender. top it off unil fluid comes out of the plug located under the vehicle.

it may get messy so have a catch pan ready. and some rags handy.
