AC no cooling

I have a 2001 Oldsmobile Intrigue with a 3.5L motor/125,000 miles. At the beginning of last summer i was cooling fine but by the end it stopped working due to a slow leak. Now this spring we took it in to be serviced. It still held about 1/2 pound of 134a. The system was recharged back up and still did not operate. The clutch kicks in and turns the compressor. The high and low gauge readings was 90 on both sides. The tech suggested the compressor was the problem. At what GM wants for them I am willing to check out other ideas as to the reason the unit does not work. Also he stated this is a axial piston compressor and the plate sticks in them to cause this problem is that correct?
Thanks
Much
Bob

Go through the troubleshooting list in the Chilton manual. It could be the throttle valve, since both sides of the system are equal. It could really be the compressor, too.
If you're not mechanical, take the car to a specialized a/c shop and have it checked out by a real expert.

If you thing compressors are high, check the price for the abs motor. $1000 + labor, dealer only.

Check Rockauto.com for AC parts, they have a few choices, and reasonable too!

A light tangent - If you are mechanical, get the GM shop manual. It flat out blows Chiltons away.

If you are going to DIY, you will need at least a manifold (2 pressure gauges attached to 3 hoses) and a vacuum pump. Ideally if you can find someone to suck out the remaining freon and give it back to you later would be great.

let the dealer do it that diagnosed it, if it isnt a compressor then they will eat the cost of the repair. normally technicians, including myself dont like hand me downs from another repair shop. we dont know what has been done to the car and we know if it isnt diagnosed right, its our fault.
