99 Chevy 3500 4x4 rear wheel seal keeps leaking

I have a 1999 3500 crew cab 4x4 short bed. For the last 2 years the left(drivers side) rear seal keeps going out or leaking. I have replaced the complete rear end housing with a brand new one from chevy, and replaced the hub and bearings new from chevy. Dont get even a 1000 miles on it before it starts leaking again. Have checked the vent and it is clear anybody got an answer to this problem.

How's the axle itself?

The axle is fine it is a floating axle so the seal works on the rear end housing, and is held in the hub.

Duh....guess that part didn't click with me. So it's the 10.5" corporate GM axle?

did you make sure you got all of the old seal out of the axle housing?

ran into that before, comes apart when you remove it, and remnants of the old one like to stay in the axle housing, hard to see and hard to notice.

Exclamation Re: 99 Chevy 3500 4x4 rear wheel seal keeps leaking

Had a long chat with Chevrolet today and this is a common problem and they have a special seal for this. the new seal locks onto the seal flange and in the hub then it spins within itself (a 2 peice seal) it is nice that they let me buy a new housing and hub and 7 sets of brake shoes before they finally give me the seal for a cost of $19.98 vs $4271.00 already spent.
