    2004 Silverado fuel gauge issue

    Hey guys,

So tonight after the past few days of -2x degrees, i noticed my fuel gauge staying past full, then today, it fell down below F (to the right) that and is pointing down wards now. When i turn the ignition on, it still moves and when i start the truck it recalibrates as it always did.... just upside down now. I can't tell if it's even reading if the fuel is going down I haven't driven it much since.

I know the stepper motor is working, i can hear it hit the limit on the gear sometimes, it clicks and i can watch the needle hit empty.

Did a little research on the internet, wasn't happy with my results.

    Any help?

I wanted an answer! Way to live up to your handle

Really, even if the gauge still works. Can't it just be moved back up? The one think I dont' know much about are clusters. I don't want to buy a new/reman one if at all possible.

Re: 2004 Silverado fuel gauge issue

Since the gauge is still working (stepper motor is working too), I'm going to have a gauge sweep done to try to resolve the issues, around $40.

If that doesn't resolve the issue, $400 out the door for a new cluster installed. I can install the damn thing, just have to have it programmed. GM, i really wish you would have extended the life of your service bulliten for this, you know these things are prone to all sorts of issues.

7 year 70,000 miles doesn't cut it for me. I have 107,044 miles.

    Will post update later.

GM has/had a free cluster "special policy" repair issued:
Its not a recall but a "Special Policy" bulletin,Heres a copy of it,The reimbursement info is at the bottom...

2003-2004 GMC SIERRA, YUKON, YUKON XL

THE SERVICE PROCEDURE IN THIS BULLETIN HAS BEEN REVISED. IN A SMALL NUMBER OF VEHICLES, THE GAUGE SWEEP TEST MAY NOT ALWAYS CONFIRM THE CONDITION. PLEASE REVIEW THE SERVICE PROCEDURE IMMEDIATELY.

DUE TO PART AVAILABILITY, THIS SPECIAL COVERAGE IS BEING ADMINISTERED IN PHASES. YOU WILL BE NOTIFIED AS EACH ADDITIONAL PHASE IS RELEASED.

CUSTOMERS ARE BEING INSTRUCTED TO CONTACT THE DEALERSHIP TO ARRANGE AN APPOINTMENT IF THEY BELIEVE THEIR VEHICLE HAS THIS CONDITION. DEALERS ARE TO OBTAIN THE VEHICLE MILEAGE WHEN SCHEDULING A SERVICE APPOINTMENT. THE VEHICLE MILEAGE WILL BE REQUIRED WHEN PLACING AN ORDER FOR THE IPC.

    Condition
Some customers of 2003-2004 model year Cadillac Escalade, Escalade ESV, and Escalade EXT; Chevrolet Avalanche, Silverado, Suburban, and Tahoe; and GMC Sierra, Yukon, and Yukon XL vehicles have reported that one or more of the instrument panel (IP) cluster gauges stick, flutter, or become inoperative. This may cause inaccurate readings, including the speedometer and fuel gauge.

    Special Coverage Adjustment
This special coverage covers the condition described above for a period of 7 years or 70,000 miles (110,000 km), whichever occurs first, from the date the vehicle was originally placed in service, regardless of ownership.

Dealers are to replace the instrument panel cluster after the condition has been verified. The repairs will be made at no charge to the customer.

For vehicles covered by Vehicle Service Contracts, all eligible claims with repair orders on or after September 28, 2007 are covered by this special coverage and must be submitted using the labor operation codes provided with this bulletin. Claims with repair orders prior to September 28, 2007, must be submitted to the Service Contract provider.

    Vehicles Involved
Involved are certain 2003-2004 model year Cadillac Escalade, Escalade ESV, and Escalade EXT; Chevrolet Avalanche, Silverado, Suburban, and Tahoe; and GMC Sierra, Yukon, and Yukon XL vehicles built within the following VIN breakpoints:

Re: 2004 Silverado fuel gauge issue

There's no need to call the dealer at 107k miles. There has to be a cutoff sometime/mileage. The guys with 150k will complain it didn't go to 200.

Good luck with the gauge sweep.

You and me both. So far no call back. I was shocked to hear her say that, even though I know their guidelines. She told me that I qualified, if I call and they tell me that's not true, I'm going to fight them for giving me false information. Or maybe this will all just work out

Note: My gauge is in fact working, I'm watching it move as I made a 3 hour drive lastnight. It's just not on the gauge notches. Wish there was an easy way to fix that.

I'll keep you guys up to date with what I find out!

P.S. I've already checked out ebay, there is a reputable place to send it to, good news is, I walk to work. My truck can sit w/o a gauge cluster for a week and a half if needed. I can remove/install that badboy myself.

Re: 2004 Silverado fuel gauge issue

Some of those cluster rebuilders just swap out your core for a repaired unit thatson the shelf. They reset it to your mileage and ship it back usually in the same day its recieved.

Its best to contact a couple of them and ask...............

Re: 2004 Silverado fuel gauge issue

That was a giant nightmare. No help at all after telling me I qualified. I am very displeased with the outcome of this even though I knew the answer before I placed the call. I asked to speak with a manager multiple times until my voice was heard. The manager was easier to talk to, but she said there was nothing they could do. They called my vehicle old. I said excuse me? A 2004 is an old vehicle? It's half way through it's life if that! That's like calling me old! (I'm 27).

I digress, after telling them that GM fixed my blower heater resistor under warranty, i was appauled to hear that this known issue was not covered. The manager "understood" and asked me if there was anything else she could do. I said, please consider the customer, and the fact that your company has recognized this to be a known issue with these 03-04 trucks. Furthermore, extending this warranty to cover to 120,000 miles would be in there best interest. I also told them that I'm not paying $400 for this. I'm going to find a 3rd party that will replace all of the stepper motors. She stated that I should make sure they have a warranty, I stated I've already done my homework on this and the business I have in mind has lifetime warranty on parts and labor.

I'm a bit heartbroken at the moment, as I am one of the biggest GM fan's you'll meet.

In the big picture, this is about the only thing to go wrong that wasn't general maintenance, so if this is it, then I'll take it. I know many people who have BMW's, VW's, ect that have other problems and its much more expensive, outside of general maintenance.

I'll be tearing my bezel off and shipping my cluster next week. New blue LED's for gauge lighting. No programming needed as they ship me back my cluster. I spoke with the business owner and he assured me that the turn around is 24 hours after they receive it.

Re: 2004 Silverado fuel gauge issue

Update (to those who care/interested): I noticed my gauge reading right the other way, or what I thought was right with the amount of mileage I put on. I filled the truck up and now it shows full!

Called the ebay shop and told them to keep me on hold, he said he had no problem with that, he has others who have had "not had time" to pull their clusters but have paid. This guy seems really nice, has answered the phone 3 times I've called. Very legit.

Maybe it'll last another year, maybe it it will last another day. Good news is, I know I have a $175 repair if needed or it will be refunded if I don't.

the tach and speedo on my truck will do similar things. theyll periodically stop working, then start up again but be completely off. the tach will think 6k is 0, or the speedo will be 50 mph off, eventually they fix themselves (how im not really sure). but then it happens all over again. its something ive been living with.
