    2004 Malibu Starting Problem

I have a friend with a 2004 Malibu Maxx V6 with 32,000 miles on it. She has had the car for a few months and has had a starting problem twice in the past week and once shortly after she got the car. The car tries to turn over, but does not start. If she waits approximately 5 minutes the vehicle will start fine. Otherwise the car runs fine. I'm wondering if any of the dealership guys (or anyone else) know the cause of this problem.

Also, maybe this TSB is related to this issue.

    One more thing . . .

She has taken the car to the dealer and has been told that they cannot find a problem with the car.

That bulletin states to check a bunch of different grounds for looseness whcih can cause a no start issue. Did they do those checks? It also recommends a software update for the pcm if it is a 4 cylinder. Of course if there are codes stored they need to go through the diag, but since they say they didnt find anything that must mean there werent any.

There are other bulletins for ground problems, but unfortunately, it is going to have to happen for them to isolate the issue. There are just way too many things that can cause that problem. Sorry I cant be more help.

Thanks, Shadams. I will ask her if they checked for lose grounds.

I had the same problem with my wifes car last year with the 3.5l. It wasn't a big deal but when using the remote start it could on occasion take 5-10 seconds to start. The dealership did reflash the PCM in my car and haven't had a problem ever since (I have no idea what the firmware version was and is now).

Thanks Canyonaro. I passed along that info to my friend. Although the car also has had trouble starting even when she hasn't used the remote start, that doesn't necessarily mean she isn't having the same problem. Does anyone know the latest firmware version?
