2004 Cavalier windshield wiper problem...anyone have a suggested fix?

Need help with the windshield wipers on a 2004 Chevy Cavalier.
During the snow yesterday, the wipers were turned on and were working fine, but the heavy wet snow falling would not sweep all the way off the windshield. You know how it is sometimes, as it falls, if it is wet and the temperature is cold enough, it accumulates on the edges of the windshield and gets packed solid. The result is that bit by bit, the wipers are then not able to traverse as far. For the Cavalier, with each traverse this continued, until eventually, there was a “pop” sound and then the wipers did not work any more. The motor is still working, but the wiper arms do not move at all.
Does anyone know if there are any known issues/fixes for this kind of problem? If there is anyone that has info about troubleshooting it would be greatly appreciated!
    Thanks!

It sounds as though you broke something in the wiper transmission assembly.

You can remove the wiper blades / arms, then the cowl cover and inspect the transmission. Some pivot points are fastened together with press-fit nylon fittings.

You may have to replace the wiper transmission assembly. Good luck.
