Question 2003 Bravada AWD CV joint replacement

sanity check here please.. replacing Rt side CV assy half shaft on 2003 AWD bravada. Upon removal from the tranny, cavity and cage roller bearing behind external seal receiving the spine shaft is dry. Is there supposed to be gear oil in this cavity or grease? Was expecting to need to drain the front transaxle of oil before shaft removal, but alass... cavity is dry. hummmm.

Red face Re: 2003 Bravada AWD CV joint replacement

FYI. Here's what I found on replacing the CV assemby shafts (Rt and Lf) for the AWD Bravada: 2 pints synth 75W90 required in the front differential after receiving the Left CV assembly. For removal of the CV assembly, a lock ring on the spline shaft end requires a wedge/pry on the Tri-Hub housing to extract the CV joint from the case (careful to not tear the seal or bugger up the casting) , or use a special hub puller if it's stuck. Passenger side housing receiving the Rt CV shaft is attached to the right side of the engine block/oil pan and is not oil filled. The inner right side female spline in this cavity is driven by a small shaft exiting front differential thru a tube in the oil pan - the supporting roller cage behind this rt side outboard seal (original question above) just gets packed with wheel bearing grease. I don't have access to the factory service manual.. If this is incorrect, I'd appreciate any revisions or comments. Thanks.

If this is the same as an Envoy or Trailblazer all you need to do is reinstall it, the unit is prefilled with grease.

Thanks Dr. Gizmo. One other recent post for removal of the side housing from the oil pan - the inner two bearings supporting the intermediate shaft were dry (no grease).
