2002 Firebird V6 Accelerator pos sensor

I have a Firebird, 2002, with v6. I got stuck with it the other day but was able to get home on red eng power.

The trouble code is P1125 which is the Accelerator Position Sensor. This will be the third time I have had this failure. It seems to happen about every 25000 miles and I see it is a common problem in other cars.

My problem is I can't find any source for the part. The last two came from the dealer which was expensive and my local dealer is notoriously difficult to deal with.

Does anyone know of an alternate source or cross reference part number.

Thank you
Lou b.

I've had some luck with www.rockauto.com for some OE parts. Or check with www.gmpartsdirect.com for this but their shipping is pretty steep.

Re: 2002 Firebird V6 Accelerator pos sensor

Part number is 24506358. I got a price of $485 plus tx from my local dealer. He is telling me there are only two in the area and if I want it I have to pre pay for it.

It is sold as a complete pedal assembly with return spring and linkage to the electrical control box at top. My electrical connector looks like it has 22 pins. (Might be 24 as the pins are small and my eyes were struggling to see them.) A nylon dog bone connects the pedal to the electrical and return spring components (cheap and unreliable IMHO for such a connection and price.) Probably will break at some point as it is under alot of stress in normal use. The whole set up is about 24" long from top to bottom. Two (2) bolts hold it to the firewall. Probably takes about 10 min to change out.

I am guessing from the looks of the connector that this is not a simple resistance devise. It looks like digital communications to the onboard computer.

Any help with a source? This is the third one I am installing. It goes bad like clockwork every 25,000-30,000 miles.

I love the car but this is ridiculous. A cable or linkage is very fixable even without the oem parts. You can hobble components together. This electronic stuff is unrelenting.

Re: 2002 Firebird V6 Accelerator pos sensor

part retails for $483...

My local PDC in Chicago-land shows they stock it...

So do about 20 dealers in the US according to the D2D parts locator...

Fits 99-02 Firebird & Camaro 3800 V6...

What is inside there? Can it be taken apart? Maybe it is some kind of wiper that can be pushed down to wear a new track, like those old Bosch L-Jetronic "flapper door" air flow meters. Nearly 500$ for something that isn't an engine or transmission is nuts

It's a "drive by wire" potentiometer (sp?) common on many vehicles today...

I can't say I ever sold one for an F car...but then I can't recall when I last saw one!

I have three Zcars that all have that luft system. I got to say it worked great. I love those Bosh systems.

Re: 2002 Firebird V6 Accelerator pos sensor

I replaced the part yesterday. It took me about an hour. Most of the time spent was looking for a hidden bolt.

There are three bolts and an electrical connector. Two bolts and the connector are in site and you can get to them from under the dash. The third bolt is high on the firewall just above the brake booster. 8mm socket. You have to get to it with a long reach ratchet. I used a speeder wrench and cranked away.

The assembly falls right out and the new one goes in easily. Set the two bolts on the inside hand tight to keep it aligned. Third bolt from the engine side is long and will find it's way. Crank them down and attach the electrical connector.

I set the key to on with engine off and pumped the pedal slowly from idle to full throttle 5 times to let the computer learn the new stroke.

I noted a noticeable click in the throttle body when stroking the pedal. I am afraid that is going to fail soon. That has to be 2 grand.

After the repair I took it for a spin and the throttle response is sharp and quick. Although I did not notice any sluggishness before, the new throttle is definitely improved.

The electrical package is closed inside a blind riveted box. When I have a moment I am going to drill out the rivets and see what the electronics look like. Hopefully something simple will jump out at me.

Anybody know how much a throttle body for a 3800 goes for?

Thanks for all the help.
