ok so my brother in law has a 2001 impala with a trans that is slipping (shocker i know) but im not very familiar with GM trans as i am a Dodge Chrysler Jeep master tech... need to know how involve either rebuilding or replacing the valve body for the TCC valve or whatever it is that goes bad... any advice on where to start
I'll let others chime in, but in my experience the tranny is not known for slipping. It usually hard shifts, loses gears, or quits pulling all together.
I'd ck it for codes. Also a clogged fuel filter will make it shift badly. As will engine misfires.
If you're a tech re and re of the valvebody is not a bad job. the separator plate gaskets are bonded so get a new separator plate and if you are going to rebuild the valvebody yourself sonnax sells the parts. Get the codes and repost, I will tell you which bores are worn and need to be reamed also install a Transgo shift kit do everything in the kit it will dial the unit right in, we have been using them for years.
If the unit is slipping it will need a rebuild they are known for second gear to slip if it is low on fluid and 4th if it gets to hot.
