05 Sierra Transfer Case (I think) noise...

Hi folks, new to this forum. Hope to meet some friendly, and helpful people

Anyway, I have an 05 GMC Sierra (1500/5.3/Z71). It has 36,000 miles (I bought it new). I have a company issued vehicle for work so I (unfortunately) don't get to drive my tuck much....

I have been through hell with the 4 wheel drive....a year ago I started having the famed "Service 4WD" on the dash. I took it straight to the dealership and they said it needed a new switch, so I had them do it ($400 thank you, they also said they had to re-program something as well).

Now, about a month ago I start having the "Service 4WD" message again. this time the truck starts some funny things.....shifting itself into 4-Lo/Hi....Not shifting into 4 at all......I take it back to the dealership, now it needs an "encoder motor", so I had them do it ($630 thank you).

And that brings me to this: I am now hearing some "moans & groans" from the transfer case when in 4 wheel. I am the only owner/driver. NOBODY drives this truck except for me. It has never been "4-wheeling, beat on, etc.). I always take it out of 4wheel on even partially dry roads (I mostly use the 4WD in the winter, I live in New England). Anyway, I am going to try flushing the transfer case, but I dont want to open a can of worms here. I also dont want to keep shoving $$$ into this truck if it is going to keep this stuff up

    Any suggestions?????

    Thanks

You will meet some friends here, no doubt.

Unfortunately, I don't likely have good news for you.

I'm pretty sure you have internal transfer case problems. Nothing to do but take it down and inspect it.

Ughhhh, I was affraid of that. Thanks for the response though. Any idea what a re-built t/case goes for??

You know, I used to be able to do anythng to repir my own cars. I just dont trust myself with these newer ones......if the t/case needs to come out and be opened up then I might as well buy a re-built one and install it. I am not going to open that up myself.......

Have you checked the fluid level? Have you noticed any leaks?
GM has had issues with the New Venture/Process 4wd trans. cases
with a problem called "Pump Rub" in which a pump spacer wears thru
the case shell and all the fluid leaks out and the case self destructs.

The switch issues was normal for your year but the encoder motor issue
    is rare at that mileage.

Run it till it self destructs..................
