Re: 1987 Holden VL Calais Turbo
the Turbo's then were super unreliable. The Front tire looks like two

(I think you might be referring to turbos of the 60's, the car is from the mid 80's) The T3 turbo was one of the most reliable, there are many still going strong after 300,000 Kms, mine has been fine up to 250,000Kms when I decided to change the compressor housing to get more flow and as the top end was out of the car at the time had it reconditioned, it has the same housing, wastegate and ancilliaries. Dont forget the T3 has a water gallery. Suggest make a post or poll on http://calaisturbo.com.au and see just how many people report their T3's are standard and still going )The front tyres are two, all wheels on my car have two independent V rated tyres, had them on my car since 1989, Being able to drive on a flat around country or city has got me out of trouble a few times ![]()

Re: 1987 Holden VL Calais Turbo
What's the story with the twin tires? (tires, not tyres
)

WTF? I've never even heard of that. Are the wheels special to use two tires? Or can it be done on regular wheels?

Re: 1987 Holden VL Calais Turbo
I remember a thread about these twin tires from a while back, but I can't find it.
go to: http://www.carbibles.com/tyre_bible.html and scroll about 2/3 the way down the page to the TwinTyre section.

Re: 1987 Holden VL Calais Turbo
Heres the article I wrote a few years ago:- http://www.carbibles.com/ttyreopinion.html
Here are some more pics:- http://niche.iinet.net.au/Twins/ Have an old advert at bottom of this page:- http://niche.iinet.net.au Yes they are US legal, DOT approved wheels and tyres, used to be a US company making them in California "Twin Tire Inc", moulds came from Japan and UK and Avon Tyres in UK had some, found a few more new tyres in South Australia plus some in Queensland, seems there are a few enthusiasts around that have tyres and still want wheels, I got some more wheels just recently, have about 45 now but sold 23 to Florida just last year to another enthusiast who also has a few tyres. Have enquiry from old family in europe that also found tyres in france of all places. Have another two sets of new wheels all others are s/h but in good condition, just need a dusting and polish. In summary the benefits are:- - Able to run flat, even with one tyre flat on all wheels ! - Huge resistance to aquaplaning as slots in wheels allow water to leave axially - Can independently control tyre pressures so you can even out wear/handling - Run much cooler - Wont squirm when hard braking like a wide ordinary tyre - Feel much more stable on dirt roads at high speed - Last about 15 to 20% longer than ordinary single tyres. Two negatives are:- - Wheel is a little heavier which you will notice for sporty driving but wont notice for normal city or country - Attracts attention from people behind as it leaves unusual marks in the wet ! The local technical director of the company Conrad Erhardt raced on them and beat the others in the same class, he adjusted tyre pressures to give him great cornering stability and I understand that gave him better braking in the corners. Since ultimate speed was not the aim the extra wheel weight wasnt an issue, wouldnt work for nascar though - but I understand they sometimes run two tubes in each tyre to give the best profile for the track camber... I've been running on them since about 1989 and wouldnt use anything else now, still have many new tyres but will be using up lots of s/h tyres first and will prob get them recapped for city use. Have found a guy down south that can make new ones but he has family dynamic issues and is concentrating first on tyres for the mining boom, his machine is pretty sophisticated and can make almost any profile with the touch of a few buttons ! I'm really into electronics and the twin tyre thing is a bit of a hobby and sideline to my normal electronic design business but I've met heaps of odd and interesting people who enjoy the concept, at the moment I'm really trying to find which USA version of GM cadillac used this type of fuseholder in the engine bay or underdash (help):- Heres the brochure for my existing seriously upgraded design, received pretty well around Australia and sold about 600 now, been swamped with enquiries in recent hot weather so running behind on deliveries at about 2 weeks now with more on order, sometimes sell on ebay if excess:- http://niche.iinet.net.au/VLFuse_Brochure_V2.doc Thanks for the questions guys, if you are interested in more pics of the wheels and tyres or fuserail/holders, maybe easier to send me a pm, btw: There is at least one merc in Florida owned by a pizza guy and his friend may also have one shortly they run on the Italian speedline flat dished twins. We also used to have a couple of stretch limos in perth that used the same wheels but were the 5-spoke, I bought them a few weeks ago ![]() cheers

That is crazy.
Closest thing I've ever seen is a bloke taking an XF Falcon out the Mudlake south of Perth with duallies on the rear. |
