Hmmm.

What a... nice, shiny, tank you've got there, darndot.

Gets me all hot and bothere.....

Never mind.

Keep the pics comin', darndot! I actually like these slow-paced progressions. Keeps us interested in the project...

The car has been apart for almost two years now. I would definitely call it slow.

Re: darndot's 65 Monza Corvair (7/15/08)

I really like the way unpainted tanks look... My tank on the SS is like that too (most people leave them grimy or paint them black), looking at it from behind and seeing those aluminum mufflers and that shiny gas tank is the greatest.

How's that exhaust coming?

Re: darndot's 65 Monza Corvair (7/15/08)

The exhaust is not here yet. I hope before the weekend.

The gas tank is between the front firewall and the trunk which is in the front of the car. The big rusty cross member that you see is the front suspension. The suspension is held on to the car with six bolts. I will deal with it later on.

Re: darndot's 65 Monza Corvair (7/15/08)

My exhaust came in on Saturday. I will save the vendor rant for a different website.

The exhaust is simple, but need to be hang from the motor and not the car. This keeps the exhaust from having leaks.

Re: darndot's 65 Monza Corvair (8/03/08)

Battery was dead, and it took most of the afternoon to charge it back up. It fired a couple times and ran for a few seconds. I think the timing is off.

I am hoping to be able to take it out in the next few weeks for a shake down. I still have a bunch of stuff that needs to be done before I take very far.

During the down time, I was working on the caprice, and found I have a limted slip rear axle. I also have an air compressor that is unplugged that runs the runs the air shocks that are shot.

Re: darndot's 65 Monza Corvair (8/03/08)

I have had problems getting it started, and had to bring in a Corvair Club member to take a look at my car. He found that I have a bad fitting that kept the fuel system from priming. I also have a bad vacuum leak that is keeping it from idling. He did adjust the valves from me. That is a nasty oily job as you can see by the picture. The exhaust has to be let down and the oil drips on to the mufflers. Did I mention you should adjust them while the car is running.

I am going to have a fun mess to clean up. Some new gasket should be in the mail this week and I will try to start it again.

I admire your tenacity darndot. Can't wait till I can get my fixer-upper, so I can curse at it.

I can only curse when my daughter is not around. Some times I have to send her to the house.

Adjusting the valves are a mess even with an valve cover on heads that have been cut in half. We guesstimate that was a quart a oil on the floor. Thank god for kitty litter.

I just might get to drive in next weekend.

I went to a Swap meet and Car show last weekend. I now have a renewed effort. Here are some pictures. The had over 45 Corvairs.

That fastback is awesome there (haven't seen many live ones...) and I gotta agree, there is nothing like seeing other restored examples to renew one's faith in his own restoration
