darndot's 65 Monza Corvair (10/21/08)

I have owned the car for two years now. June 16, 2008. I thought if I started posting progress I might get it done quicker.

The motor before I took it out.

The motor covered in years of grime.

The problem.

Sending parts off to be cleaned.

My daughter in the space where the motor should be.

Cleaned and painted.

Motor being built.

The motor as it sits now back in the car.

I have several things to do before I can start it. Wiring, Fuel pump, and a whole big list.

Ohh...nice!

Next time I am down your way, I sure hope to be able to see the Corvair in person!

Next time you are down this way, I hope to drive it to see you.

Here is another while the motor was out. She was two then, that seems like ages ago.

Re: darndot's 65 Monza Corvair

I think I should be able to try to start it some time next week. I just installed a new wiring harness from the front of the car back to the engine. I also installed the belly pan last night.

Thanks for the comments so far.

I was able to get it started on Saturday. Next step is exhaust and a new gas tank.

Are you gonna risk getting a ticket and drive to the exhaust shop or are you doing it all yourself? Sounds like it's getting exciting!

I was going to trailer it down to the muffler shop, but my corvair buddy advised against. Muffler shops don't know how to deal with corvairs. I found out that you cannot hang the mufflers off of the body. You will end up breaking the welds due to how much the motor moves. Mufflers have to be mounted to the end of the motor with a strap. I ordered everything from a Corvair catalog. I will just have to show you what it looks like when it comes in. Since the motor is a 140 they had dual exhaust from the factory. It should have a intresting sound.

Oh wow, that sounds kind of complicated. Should be interesting to see how it works though

Very cool looking car Darndot. You've done a great job with it.

Are we going to get a youtube vid of the sound when you get it together?

I have never done a vid on youtube. I might have to try that.

The mufflers are not complicated, but most shops have never seen one.
