Solstice Coincidence???

Here is something I found. The Solstice and the 1954 Pontiac Bonneville. Was this design used for the Solstice?

I'm sure it was used for inspiration.

What a beautiful concept. Love the 1950s.

Re: Solstice Coincidence???

I had noticed this recently too...thanks for posting the pics. By the way, is your screen name derived from the Artemisia group of aromatic plants?

Oh! I though the name was after Artemis the greek goddess of forests and hills, child birth, virginity, fertility and the hunt. Talk about multitalented.

Thanks I did not know any of that! I guess I will see if I can learn how and why that family of plants got its name.

Re: Solstice Coincidence???

Umm, I thought the Solstice is visually challenged, but if the Bonnie concept was indeed their starting point, it might be the first time GM actually vastly improved the design on its way to mass production...

Re: Solstice Coincidence???

I have tried and tried for months to find on-line an image I have framed in my livingroom of a Pontiac concept that I cut out of "Cars Detroit Never Built" years ago that I have long felt was the inspiration for the 1988 Pontiac Banshee concept car.

p.s. for the heck of it I went to Amazon and found a slightly used copy for just 55 cents (one happy tightwad here!) plus $3.99 shipping. I will be curious if this one has that cool Pontiac concept that looks late 50s-early 60s, or if it was the other edition I had bought in Denver and cut up to frame pages of. This car, from the sculpted wheel wells to the fins (that if smoothed down look like the spoiler on the Banshee) has long convinced me it was the inspiration for the awesome 1988 Banshee. If the pic is in the book I will see if I can scan it and somehow post it here since I don't have Picassa or Bucket.

No, it was a nickname given to me on a chat room when I started on the net in '97. It is a Italian God of light. It is also, yes, the Greek Goddess.

Re: Solstice Coincidence???

I've seen the Bonneville Special concept before. It was a cousin of the Corvette and an Oldsmobile version called the F-88, but only the 'Vette made it to production. It wasn't until I saw side-by-side pictures that I noticed the resemblance.

I can't stand the Solstice but when I saw that concept I was like...heyyyy? What have we got here?

Re: Solstice Coincidence???

While trying once more to find that Pontiac concept I have framed in my livingroom I found a good sized image of one my favorite over-the-top GM concepts, the Firebird 3...captures the heady futurism of those days I so loved as a kid....and still do!

There is no "Italian God of light", you've been tricked into believing that. Artemis is the (female) Goddess of the stuff listed above, twin sister of Apollo and daugther of Zeus and Leto. Her Roman name was Diana.

There is a fantasy novel hero called Artemis Fowl, and Artemis is Queen Serenity's (inexplicably) male cat in the Sailor Moon manga.
