The Paine
Pretty much belongs under "Cool Architecture", but I thought I'd give it it's own space. Not long after moving here I discovered that there was a very interesting place in Oshkosh, about 15mins North of here. The place is the Paine Art Center, or the Paine Estate.
http://www.thepaine.org/ Short version of its history: Back in the early 1900's, a wealthy lumber baron (Nathan Paine) decided to build a mansion. Oddly though, they had set out to not only build a mansion but an art museum. The home was to be open to the public, and contained a few galleries. During construction, however, Mr. Paine died. Thus, nobody actually ever lived in the house. His widow Jessie finished the house (changing some of the now-unnessecary rooms into more art space, though the Estate is finished close to how it would've looked had they lived there) and ran it as a museum until her death in 1973. I visited The Paine, and took a fair amount of photos. No photography is allowed inside though. A shame because they were decorating it for The Nutcracker. ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() You can see some of the decorations in the window. ![]() I imagine the gardens look better in the summer. ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() Just thought I'd share, it's a neat little art museum.
