There are lots of great 1970s Buicks on there all the time. I love those big old cushy land yachts! I would love a late 70s Electra Park Avenue with the fluffy plush velour seats to cruise around in. Or better yet, a 1979 Rivera S-Type, Motor Trend's Car of the Year that year.

My favorite Buick of those days would be the '71 Riviera followed closely by the '71 Centurion coupe. I love the Electras as well, especially the '75 Park Avenue Deluxe and convertible.

You and I have the same exact taste in cars. gotta love the old cushy boats. That's what true luxury is. Not some "european" luxury car that jars your bones. Nope real luxury cars have crushed velour pillow seats, deep deep carpeting, opera lights, and loads of chrome and wood trim. Oh how I wish Buick made that type of car still. It was the little home touches that made it luxurious, not how the car handled corners, or how much technology can be stuffed into the cabin.

I appreciate today's definition of luxury but find it unfortunate that there are so few cars left that offer any sort of "traditional" luxury. Perhaps the market is not a significant enough for it. Who knows. But little things like padded/upholstered door panel inserts, softer seating and carpeting, and details like pull straps on seatbacks or rear footrests are all things that can only be found in select high-end luxury vehicles today. Buicks and Oldsmobiles had them thirty years ago and it certainly made them feel "special" compared to lower level cars. I remember even my first car, a 1981 Buick Regal Limited coupe had 1/2" thick fur carpeting. It's the only car I've even been in where I regularly felt the carpeting and would even take a shoe off because it felt so nice! It's nice to see that plenty of those old cars have been well kept and are now considered classics. I hope to own one some day!

Just for fun, here are the vehicles on my classic car wish list:

Any 1979-85 Buick Riviera, though I'd prefer an S-Type/T-Type model
1976-1980 Buick Electra Park Avenue (The most gathered/wrinkled seating in automotive history!)
1989-90 Buick Park Avenue Ultra (20-way power seats!!)
1985 Buick LeSabre Limited Collector's Edition (with the Park Avenue seats)
1981-87 Pontiac Grand Prix Brougham or any Buick Regal Somerset Special Edition of that vintage
1978 Cadillac Eldorado Biarritz (the beige/brown two tone model)
1974-76 Cadillac Fleetwood Talisman (very rare and ultra luxurious for the day)
1980-85 Cadillac Seville Elegante

Man, that '67 Riviera is a cool looking machine. I wish more attention was paid to seat detail on todays cars. There are some very subtle things there but it makes them all that more interesting.

Couldn't agree more.

My grandfather just acquired a 1984 Cadillac Coupe Deville, with 60,000 miles on it. In near perfect shape too. I swear I'm in love with it. Everything about it screams luxury. He promised me it'll one day be mine, so I got that to look forward to (if the engine doesn't explode, it's that pesky 4100).

I own a 1990 Buick Park Avenue (non-ultra), and I absolutely love it. It's getting up there in mileage, but man, it still rides and drives like a dream. It may be FWD, and it may not have a V8 under the hood, but I think it still captures the essence of true American luxury. It's got 225,000 miles on it, and it runs better than my 2004 Suburban, which is kinda sad honestly....

When it comes time to buy another vehicle, I hope to find another 85 to 90 park ave to replace this one. Hopefully by that time I'll also have a garage kept Cadillac Coupe Deville too.

I remember seeing a 1983 Buick Park Ave on ebay about 6 months ago. I still have the pictures somewhere. It was gorgeous, I would have bought it in a minute if I had the cash. I haven't seen one in as good of shape since.

I keep a library of images from cars I've found on eBay. It's hard to find photos of some of the more obscure vehicles from the past, but eBay is a great source. There were so many special edition models - the 1986-87 Oldsmobile 98 Grande' with the pigskin seat straps and leather console, the 1979 Oldsmobile Cutlass Supreme Brougham with the Mojave interior option (http://storm.tocmp.com/oldsmobile1979.htm) or the 1985-87 Electra/98 coupes, 198?-85 Eldorado Touring Coupes....the list goes on.

God I would love it if you could get interior color choices like this now:

I've been doing the same thing for years. Unfortunately, I lost about five years worth of those pictures earlier this year.

Re: Incredible Buicks on eBay

Great links--thanks for posting them! GM needs to require their designers to read about these fine cars from their past--the old catalogs would be a good source of inspiration. Modernize the design elements, the technology, the safety features--but keep alot of the "flavor" so evident in these great models of the sixties and seventies!

Re: Incredible Buicks on eBay

I miss the interior color options from back then. There were often six or more choices on some models. I remember that GM used to offer cars with white vinyl or leather and a variety of trim colors to choose from to go along with it. I think the 1993 Buick Riviera was the last to offer this. I loved the light olive green offered in many GM models. My '81 Regal had a light jade green interior with a dark jade green dash. Show me any current mainstream vehicle with something like that! There is a little hope with the morocco brown, cocoa and brick red-orange interiors offered on various current GM models and I like Mercury's use of high contrast (such as black/cream) interior trims on various models.

One thing I like doing is buying older car magazines. I acquired a complete 1980 Motor Trend set, and my god, the cars are amazing
