What a bunch of F#*#ing idiots. They should take the "peace" out of greenpeace........that is in no way peaceful. That is downright aggressive violence.

Re: Greenpeace rams Japanese Fishing Boat.

I don't think the latest one was actually Greenpeace. I thought it was another faction.

Anyway, I'm just crazy enough to agree with the anti-whalers. Japan is abusing the "reseach" allowance for whale killings. They killed a mom and calf just the other day! FOR WHAT? All this is is a way to get whale meat in restaurants. Japan is vomiting in the face of international law and treaty.

There's no humane way of killing a whale. They all suffer horrifying deaths.

They should all be sunk.

Re: Greenpeace rams Japanese Fishing Boat.

Green peace is a terror group.

I agree, Japanese folks are barbaric. I have never understood why Japan feels they need whales for industrial porposes at this time.
They can be allowed some meat, but only if the animals were not on the endagered species list.

Re: Greenpeace rams Japanese Fishing Boat.

I agree that Japan has no business in Antartic waters to perform those kinds of acts....but it takes a real crazy person to ram a boat in the middle of the ocean!

That's why I love the part in Armageddon where Bruce is hitting golf balls at their boat. It would be a different story if the whaling boats were breaking any laws, but they aren't.

This is either an act of terrorism or and act of war and should be responded to in kind. Let's see how the greenpeace nuts can swim.

Re: Greenpeace rams Japanese Fishing Boat.

Greenpeace are soooooooo stupid. I mean I share their love of the Earth and its bounty, but come on guys. Their little stunts serve no purpose but to make them look like complete idiots, even to us enlightened and open-minded folk.

If they had a lick of sense, they'd schmooze their way into the circles of those in power. That's where you get things done. One Senator on speed-dial can do exponentially more than some stupid jaunt out in a Zodiac....

Then again, all one has to do is spend ONE day whalewatching in Hermanus, South Africa (like I did countless times as a boy)... and you can't help but develop this deep kinship with whales. Somebody's gotta look out for 'em.

100% agree, whaling should be illegal. When that happens, Greenpeace can do all the ramming it wants to.

Re: Greenpeace rams Japanese Fishing Boat.

This opened a floodgate of memories...

When I was a boy, my parents were quite busy. My Dad was establishing his career in Orthodontics and Mum was busy getting her Doctorate's in Music, teaching, and performing in the Cape Town Symphony.

With six kids (well just four when I was little) and busy schedules they still took time out not only for numerous family outings, but they took time out of their schedules to give each and every one of us "special" attention. Mom took sister Jill to do the "girly" things while Dad tended to take us boys on various outings.

I was smitten after our first family outing to Hermanus to watch the whales (a popular activity with Western Cape folk). My brother Seth seemed equally mesmerised. So every other month or so, our maid Maude would pack a big picnic hamper, and Seth and I would jump into Dad's Alfa Romeo (I was older, so I always got to ride up front!) and we'd hit the road for the two-hour ride out to Hermanus. The ride may have been shorter, but it felt like forever when I was little!

Dad would find the perfect lookout point and park the Alfa, spreading a thick blanket on the hood, where Seth and I would just sit for hours, watching the whales. We'd have our picnic lunch, or sometimes a nice braai of chops and boerwors, and eventually venture down to the shoreline to get a little closer, but it seemed the view was better from up on the cliffs. The whales would venture off to wherever and we'd get fidgety, so Dad would pull out a football and toss us a few, just so we wouldn't forget that we were Americans!

Then we'd take a long walk, digging up critters buried in the sand and looking for interesting seashells, while Dad entertained us with stories about life. The sky would gradually fade to an orange-purple hue and we knew it was time to head back home. We'd pack the picnic hamper, the blanket, and our binoculars, which we'd received as birthday gifts, into the boot and hit the road back to Cape Town, arriving home just in time to enjoy our leftover dinners!

I can't quite explain it, but I developed this "oneness" with whales, even though I only watched them from a distance. I can't fathom killing one for any reason.

Walt Whitman once wrote... Re-examine all that you have been told... dismiss that which insults your soul.

Killing whales touches me deeply.

I can't summarily dismiss Greenpeace. Maybe if it hadn't been so many years since I whalewatched, I might be just as fervent as they are.

There is an international ban on commercial whaling. Japan kills 1000 whales a year for 'research' Of course they also sell the whale meat from these 'scientific' studies.

Re: Greenpeace rams Japanese Fishing Boat.

Obviously, the whalers should start carrying guns. After a few green peas see that stunts like this could cost them their lives, they'll think long and hard about becoming violent.
