Fast computers?

So a friend of mine has a dad that's crazy (and quite rich), so he built this computer called "Heavy Metal". He got on The Screensavers back when it was Tech TV and not G4. Check it out:
http://www.g4tv.com/screensavers/fea...otRod_Mod.html

That's old though, he has upgraded the computer since then. I don't know what he's running in it right now.

He used to let us have lan parties at the packaging company he owns until my friend Kyle backed into the company's brand new Chevy Express van.

Re: Fast computers?

I hate spending big bucks on a PC. They still need to be replaced in three to four years.

Only if you want to run the latest games.
My PC from 2001 runs Windows XP and Debian Linux just fine.

I agree, The Screensavers was a great show. The only thing I watched on TechTV. Haven't watched the channel since.

I also miss Call for Help. G4 is just not as cool anymore.

He's got lots of money to spend. Plus what he spent the most money on is the case itself (Don't get me wrong, he's spent lots of money on hardware). Rarely does a case have to be replaced. In fact, I've used the case I'm using right now for a couple of builds. The case fans have changed, and the hardware in the case has changed quite a few times, but it's the same case.

One day my hardware will be housed in this though:

I should also add that if you build your own PC, and plan it right it (or spend tons of money), it should last you quite a while. If you need to though, you can also upgrade certain parts. For example, I just upgraded to a dual core processor. It should extend the life of my system for quite a while. Cost me $40. You can upgrade a Dell or HP or Acer etc too, but it's usually a bit more difficult (Integrated graphics, anyone?).

That's a nice looking case I guess, but why oh why does it cost $300? I don't see anything super special about it.

Re: Fast computers?

I work in IT everyday. Ordering workstations kind of excites me, but a normal PC doesn't do much for me any more. A PACS Workstations(Xray Viewing Workstation) starts at about $15,000 and go up from there. Still in the end it need to be swapped out in about five years.

Our IT guys are getting me an awesome machine sometime soon. 64 bit, quad processors, 16 gigs of memory, lord knows what else (I do heavy duty analysis work).

Two big things:

1. It's a Silverstone. They're always expensive.
2. It's very well built. Note how it's more than just the regular box frame with a decorative plastic front. It's all aluminum, and the front panel is a part of the frame. Compare the pic I've attached to this:

That's how the majority of cases are, even the expensive ones.

Which is which? The attachment or the big pic?

Re: Fast computers?

I'm assuming the main pic is the Silverstone and the attached is the norm.
