Don't trade in the SUV just yet

Just further proof of what I've been saying for years: Crash test show bias towards ligher vehicles because our government and your insurance company wants you in a lighter car. F=MA, so less mass is going to mean less force since speed is kept the same. All the automakers can do to make a car safer is increase the time of the reaction, reducing acceleration, or to decrease the mass.

It's much more difficult for a Silverado or Trailblazer to score a good rating than it is for a Honda Civic or Accord (or Smart car) to score the same rating. The large truck has a rigid frame designed to carry payload and they are heavier...so they rip into the smaller car lilke it's made of tin foil.

This is what really happens when you crash a 96 Blazer (poor offset rating) into a 96 Accord (good offset rating). Also, see a 2002 Trailblazer crashing into a similar Accord.

....Now...que the small car driver who thinks their Cobalt or Fit is safer than a Trailblazer or Suburban because of these flawed crash test.

Re: Don't trade in the SUV just yet

In this case if the government has it's way, we would all be safer, because instead of a blazer crashing into an accord, you'd have an accord crashing into an accord, which would increase the survival chance for occupants in both cars significantly, where as here it seems the accord occupants would likely die, unlike the tahoe occupants. If someone bought a tank to use as a daily driver and they crashed into any blazer or Tahoe/fullsizer, then you would have a similar situation.

So a '96 Civic against a '96 Blazer? Neither of them are very safe at all.

Maybe everyone should just drive tanks.
If you hit somebody, you won't even know it!

Unless of course they are in another tank.

Re: Don't trade in the SUV just yet

I'd like to see some H1 vs. * crash tests. They could probably reuse the same H1 for all the tests.

Seriously though, I like to be alive, but if I need a car, I'm buyin' a car. If I need a truck, I'll get the truck... or maybe a utility trailer for the car since gas is so damn high.

That TB DESTROYED that Accord. yikes. Reason right there for all our cars becoming bloated and heavy

I respectfully disagree with you. The insurance companies don't want you in a smaller car. Institute Institute for Highway Safety president, Adrian Lund, said, "All things being equal in safety, bigger and heavier is always better."

So there you go, straight from the horse's mouth.

fair enough but that crash video looks to be about 20 yrs old, would like to see how a modern compact car holds up (who knows may be just as bad) That video is way too old though,

What's old about it? It's valid. It's a 96 blazer and a 96 Accord...with a 2002 Trailblazer added to what appears to be a 97 Accord.

Physics doesn't have an expiration date...which is why the Accord, Taurus, Malibu, and Camry are larger and heavier now. I'm curious to see how they do against the world's best selling vehicle: The Ford F series.

It's not as clear cut as you might like it to be. Size is not everything.
