Re: 1972 VW commercial - It floats!!

It sure shows they were ahead of most other manufacturer's with respect to "quality of build!" Try dropping any of its contemporaries, and lots of pieces would have flown off and it would have sounded like a crash! Of course, the safety of the designs left much to be desired. There was definitely an admirable "simplicity" to those first generation Beetles, but the only model of Volkswagen that appealed to me as a kid in the mid-seventies, for some reason, was the Squareback. I think the ads for it made it seem like a "logical" design, at least from the perspective of cargo capacity, when they compared it to big American sedans.

Ole Hitler actually came up with something good during his era.

^^^ Those are funny, especially the one is the snow where the Beetle keeps getting past by the Aston Martin.

He he ... wow, Andrew, definitely some humorous commercials.

But, that first one ... heh ... how appropriate for these days.....

Re: 1972 VW commercial - It floats!!

That was a fantastic trip down memory lane. I remember those commercials. (Was it really that long ago?...<shudder>) They were very good at getting their point across. They used comedy with practicality and build quality.

I would like to see GM do something along these lines today. Imagine GM starting out with commercials similar to these with one of their Divisions. Then maybe later on crossing over to other Divisions.

People WANT to be entertained. Nothing gets people to remember something like blending comedy with facts. That is just what VW did. They poked fun at their vehicle and backed it up with facts. It is NOT a fast car...the Aston Martin showed that. BUT, the VW gets you there in one piece. ( I used to own a VW when I was 18. It was very good in the snow with that rear engine...very much like my Dad's Corvair) It is reliable...even "James Bond" depended on the VW to get the job done.

Good stuff...
